New Zealand

Oh my...now I am somewhat excited and somewhat scared and somewhat happy and somewhat sad! It worked out! I will be going to New Zealand in September for around a year.

The only thing that really weights on my heart is my dog. Both possibilities concerning her I don´t like. She is very old, so it could be of course that she does not survive the summer. Don´t want her to die.
But the other possibility is, that I have to say Bye forever to her in September and know I will never see her again, because it is very certain, that she will not live for such a long time that I would be away. She lives with my parents and they take great care for her, but still...

I'm glad you're getting to New Zealand, TerokNor.

As for your dog, maybe you could look on it as a rare opportunity - if you leave her with your parents you'll be able to say goodbye on your own timetable. Make it meaningful and make your peace with it, rather than waiting for an unpleasant discovery some point in the coming year. Also, it might be easier to deal with her death if you've already made your goodbye before then. If you know she'll be taken care of and she's failing due to age, there's not much you can do for her, so you should probably make sure you've fortified yourself. A planned farewell might be better for that. I hope that sounds reasonable...

Congrats!!

As for your dog...make this summer special and spend as much time with her as you can. Take lots of pix.
This might sound egoistic, but take it from someone who lost her cat earlier this year--I haven't seen him for 4 years, as he lived with me mother after I'd left the country (he was also too old to go with me) and it hurt when he died...but the distance made it a little easier to cope with it, because you don't feel the emptiness.

That said, after moving you will miss her a lot and that could be the time you might miss her most. It happened to me.

Make the time that you have left with her meaningful.

That is great news, that you are going to NZ. I think it's a great opportunity for you! Having lived in another country for a while myself, I think it is a valuable experience. And from what I hear, NZ is a beautiful place.

I understand about your dog, having two of my own. But I agree with Deranged Nasat - this way, you will get to say goodbye on your own terms, and maybe even spend some quality time with her before you leave, while she is sill well enough to really enjoy the time.

I wish you lots of luck - I think it will be a tremendous experience!

Hi!

As a resident of NZ and a fellow resident of TrekBBS - Welcome on board! Where abouts? I recall your thread re: Christchurch a week or two back ...

Thanks for the advice with my dog, though every time I just look at her, I am in tears already. Will try to think about it the way you say. But don´t know if that will be working. :(

Will be working near Auckland. Actually I would have liked going to the South Island, but not near Christchurch. So its the North Island now, but I hope to travel around a bit and also do a trip or two to places on the South Island.
And depending how expensive it is I´d like to fly to Australia for a week and to one of those many small Islands at the ends of my stay. After all if I am on that end of the world I want to see as much as I can.

Is it better to take the flight that goes over London and Los Angeles... or the one that goes over London and Hong Kong?
I thought the second might have a lesser risc of terrorists, but my family says I should better fly over the USA, because if something happens and I am stuck there I at least can understand the people.
And it says while in London one changes the plane, in Los Angeles or Hongong you do not, but just have a 6 or so hours stop over. Am I allowed to leave the plane? And if so I am probably not allowed to leave the airport zone for checked in people right?
Brrr.... 30- 31 hours flight with three starts and three landings... certainly do not look forward to that. I wish we could beam!

Good to hear you're visiting our corner of the world soon, not so nice to hear about your dog though. Other people have given good advice about her.

As far as flying goes, I take it you've only looked at flying Air New Zealand, and you're flying from London I take it? I wouldn't worry about the threat of terrorism at all, just try and think positive thoughts! Either route would be good, although personally I'd fly via Hong Kong, unless you feel like finding out first-hand how inept the TSA are over in the States. Or even better, I'd look into flying with other airlines, ANZ is IMO too expensive to fly and the service isn't that great. Check out Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific as I'm pretty sure all three do connecting flights between London and Auckland with only a short transfer time at their respective hubs.

Hope you have a great time, it's good that you're waiting til the start of Spring to come over, the weather here in Auckland has been horrible for the past month or so, but that's to be expected in the middle of the winter!

I am flying from Hamburg/ Germany.
I will check out those Airlines, thanks, though are they save ones? I usually tend to rather pay a bit more, and having a good feeling with flying in a plane that seems quite save, than gettin something cheap and maybe an airline that does not do the necessary checks and stuff with their planes?
The flights I found till now ranging from around 850 Euro to 2600 Euro (one way). So I hope to get one that is somewhere inbetween 850 and 1000 Euro...that not too expensive for the flight is it? Or are they normally cheaper?

If I had to choose my dog, or New Zealand where I've always wanted to go, I'd have to stick with my dog.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

This is not a helpful comment. It just makes me feel worse. Besides it has not much to do with choosing anymore, the decision is made. It has more to do with coping with the decision.
However Max is living the last 7 years with my parents and not with me, well before that she lived with my parents too, but I lived there as well, and it just stays that way for her (if she would live with me and the only option would be to give her to a shelter I´d decite against NZ too). The only difference is that I cannot visit her anylonger and not be with her when she dies. Though I´d say this is more my problem than hers, because she is very happy with my parents and she has no idea of death. Just I will know that it will be the last time to visit and stroke and hug her, when I go to NZ.

Yeah, they are all excellent airlines, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific especially tend to be ranked #1 and #2 in the world on customer satisfaction lists on a regular basis. Just shop around and see what suits you best, check the airline websites themselves as well as they tend to be cheaper than doing it thru a travel agent usually

Singapore Airlines are really good cos my parents have flown with them. Emirates is also a great airline...
I know what its like to lose a pet TerokNor..We had our labrador Sandy put down last year before my 30th birthday. Very upsetting time...I think your dog will understand that you are going away and will try and hold on for you.
Anyway I hope you have a great time in NZ....I have been there many a time as my relatives live there..I personally reccommend visiting Queenstown for adventure and also Dunedin for its Scottish atmosphere..
