New Zealand's Prime Minister, Mr John Key, is pushing for a referendum in 2016 for a vote on changing the National Flag.

One chief complaint has been that the current flag looks very similiar to the Australian National Flag.

A possible choice for the new national flag is the Silver Fern Flag used by the New Zealand All-Blacks Rugby Team.

I was just about to say, if they make it anything Middle Earth related I think they forfeit their national status and just become a Hollywood suburb.

Oh, what's that, they made the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films there?

Aus should drop the union jack and just have the blue with the southern cross.

The fern flag is great IMO.

I dunno, being part of the Commonwealth, plus all the heritage, is a good reason to keep the Union Jack on both, IMO.

And of course, there';s the counter argument of more independence, adn I get that too.

It's not quite as straightforward as it might appear.

Plenty of countries in the commonwealth (as in, most) don't have the union jack. Including that other english speaking country, Canada

I am kind of a flag nerd, and I can see why New Zealand wants its own distictive flag: defaced British blue ensigns are a dime a dozen, and quite boring.

I like the fern but I feel the black is a bit of a downer. I also like the Southern Cross. Personally, my favourite design is this:

I'd like to see them find a design that incorporates the red, white and blue of their current flag with the red, white, and black of the Maori flag. Sort of the flag of South Africa, which pays homage to that nation's multicultural heritage.

I love Kyle Lockwood's design. Just find a good way to mix some black in there and I think it would be perfect.

The Maori Flag looks unique

But i prefer Kyle Lockwood's design.

If the Aussies ever ditch the Union Jack, they could incorporate the aboriginal flag as part of the blue background and Southern Cross.

The Aussies also have another choice like the Eureka Flag.

I like the black too. but I don't think it feels right for the whole flag. As an accent, sure. Just not sure where to put it without making the design too cluttered. Totally personal taste, of course.
