News New Version of The Storyteller Coming From Neil Gaiman and The Jim Henson Company

It has been announced that Neil Gaiman is going to be teaming up with The Jim Henson Company to do a new version of The Storyteller. The original The Storyteller series was created by Jim Henson, and starred John Hurt as a storyteller who told European folk tales and fairy tales with the help of his talking dog, voiced and performed by Brian Henson. The stories were then acted out with a combination of human actors, and Creature Shop creations. There was also a second season focused on Greek myths, with Micheal Gambon as a new Storyteller, and Brian Henson returning as his dog.

Neil Gaiman has done a lot of stuff with myths and folklore going all the way back at least to The Sandman, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with this. I just hope it's on a channel or streaming service that I have.

Bizarrely, I've never seen The Storyteller, but I'll watch/read/consume anything and everything by Neil Gaiman. Combine that with mythology, fairy tales, and the Jim Henson Company? Give it to me now!

The Storyteller was sort of part, not part of The Jim Henson Hour back in the late 80s (shortly before Henson's untimely death). I don't remember how many parts there were of it, but there were some stories.

I have both series on dvd and go back to them every so often. I always preferred season one (Hurt was an amazing narrator!), whoever they get for that part will go a long way for me. But I'm looking forward to it, regardless, there's infinite potential with this that's exciting.

If you like fairy tales and folklore you really should check it, it's awesome. Just keep in mind that it is more Dark Crystal than Muppets.
One of the other major writers for the first season was Anthony Minghella, the Oscar winning writer/director of The English Patient, Cold Mountain, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

I loved the original when I was a kid, I have the DVD for it somewhere. The story of the Soldier and Death still haunts me somewhat.
