New uniforms in Season 2 Trailer

Why do we wear any kind of style, really? Not a lot is actually functionally designed throughout.

No, but clothing tends to evolve in a natural fashion, even over centuries. Shoulder pads have traditionally been the domain of tailored clothing, which this doesn't resemble. Further, since the 18th century, the overarching trend has been clearly and dramatically toward increasingly casual wear, with less structure and padding. That's one thing I enjoy about the TOS costumes -- they got it right that in the future, people would go to work in what could pass for sleepwear.

It's not impossible that we could one day decide our Under Armour needs shoulder padding -- just look at the Golden Girls -- but it looks odd to my 21st century eyes.

Could this be a bridge? Maybe someone's quarters.

Actually, I think it might be this room Burnham is walking into

Yeah, I think it's a bridge set. That window on the left looks too big to be for quarters. And the ceiling portion you can see through the window on the right looks bridge-like. Plus the set looks circular.

Well, CBS certainly knows where the publicity value of season two is. Hint: not the return of the U.S.S. Discovery.

You're not stoked for the further adventures of Burnham, Captain Saru and the kinda robotic woman?!?

They've definitely added Beyond-style shoulder pads, which I don't get. Why would we start wearing shoulder pads in what is basically a long-sleeve T?

Maybe the '80s make a comeback?

Shoulder pads don't make a lot of design sense with raglan sleeves, which is what the production seasons of TOS and the first two Abrams movies featured - yeah, they're used occasionally (were in the 80s, anyway) but they look a bit sloppy. When using set-in sleeves, as STB did, a little shoulder padding can sharpen the silhouette rather nicely.

I completely agree. While, as I said before, I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of continuity here, I think there's good reasons for going with the main series uniforms over the Cage uniforms. First being that they're unattractive like you said, the other being that they're not as recognized.

Well, if these things are important one might rationalize that since STD takes place a few years after the events of "The Cage" that Starfleet has already updated the uniform aboard Enterprise to that used during production TOS.

Yeah, the old outfits did appear in the second pilot - "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - which is also the episode that canonically establishes "James R. Kirk." So, you have to take it as you find it...
