New TWOK Figures

To fit a contemporary WASP beauty ideal, they frequently make the head shapes all wrong, making the faces and foreheads much thinner and the heads much longer than the actors'. As a result, Commander Chekhov here looks much more like Martin Landau from "Mission: Impossible" than Walter Koenig does, and Dr. McCoy looks like a bizarre morphing of Mark Lenard and Peter Graves.

No Saavik? No sale!

In the past waves, they've planned some characters as bonus two-packs. For example, NEM Riker and Troi. There's a great Ro Laren & Elissa Ogawa TNG twin pack coming. And an "All Good Things" Novelist Geordi and Professor Data twin pack.

I'm sure the twin pack to accompany the ST II waves will be something like Saavik & Spock.

How about a ST2/ST3 Saavik two-pack? :)

Seriously, though, there really needs to be a Saavik figure.

Did you learn that in your Whiteness Studies class?

Hey, where's the bloody Peter Preston corpse figure???
Maybe they can do a two-pack... Scotty in Radsuit carrying bloodied Peter.

Which makes me think - stop me if this has been asked before - why does Scotty carry him to the bridge? Wouldn't sickbay would have been more appropriate?

Absolutely!

We studied everything from phrenology to xenophobia to the Holocaust to slavery to obsessions with skin color to resistance to interracial dating to wanting to sell products only to people like themselves to beauty pageants to hyperbole in magazines about which WASP now is the sexiest/most beautiful/most popular person "in the world." Heck, we even tried to figure out how Jesus, a Semitic man from the Middle East, ended up looking like a Viking (or one of the Gibb Brothers) once the western Europeans got hold of his story.

It was a sometimes funny, often tragic, usually violent, frequently obvious, generally pathetic subject for study.

Hi guys. Sorry to drag up a dead thread from the netherworlds of Trek. Apologies.

But...

Ive only just seen these, dunno how i missed the news, im a member of Forbidden PlanetUK mailing, woulda heard, then again, I'm useless with email so it figures.

Anyway,i think they are fantastic, not perfect though, but great. Ive been waiting for a movie edition of the 6 inchers for ages, and now i can get em. Stand them all nest to their TOS counterparts.

Anyway, i was disapointed to have two Kirks and two Khans, but no Spock, Saavik or Uhura. And also, we have Captain Terell limited edition and injured Khan limited edition aswel.

However, the bet of the lot are Scotty Khan and Sulu.

Honestly, how hard is it to sculpt a figure that actually looks like the actor? Could they possibly TRY to do it?

It's nice that we finally have a Captain Terrell figure, but damn, none of the figures looks even remotely like the actor they're supposed to represent. The suck factor is high in this one.

...Can't be too hard but I guess it may be more expensive to make them look just like the actors. The old LOTR toys that came out with each film and sold for about 6 bucks each looked very much like the actors.

Another factor is that while there are really accurate ways to model faces using laser-scanning (I think Art Asylum employed this method on their Nemesis and Enterprise figures), they require you to scan the actor's face. Obviously that wouldn't be a problem for NEM or LOTR or the upcoming Trek film, but it is a problem for a 25-year-old movie like TWOK. Everyone is either older or dead (Kelley, Doohan, Paul Winfield). Maybe the faces could have been a little better, but they look pretty good to me.

The figures are being released in waves:

Wave 1: Scott, Sulu, Chekov, McCoy - with limited injured Khan. (In USA, the four figures had to be collected from different Comiccon sellers, then you got your free bagged Khan)

Wave 2: Kirk, Khan, bloodstained Kirk - with limited Terrell.

Wave 3: Spock, Saavik, Uhura - with limited field-jacketed Kirk. (Not yet released)

BTW, Chekov comes with the cutest little Ceti eel!

Ooooh, more people here, the threads not as dead as i thought it might be, thought you'd all seen this first time round.

Anyway, as were all back, ive uploaded more pics, this time, including all of them.

This happens in any figure range. Like Therin has said, most major companies now use laser scanning for the face sculpt. Look at the Enterprise and Nemesis figures, fantastic detail. But again, its difficult to do it when 1) three of the actors from the film in question are dead 2) They are all a lot older than they were 3) even the best sculpts are never perfect. You will never achieve 100% perfection, thats a fact.

Look at other figure/toy ranges. Serenity for instance. Im a massive, humongous loyal Firefly/Serenity fan, waited AGES for a figures to come out, or even collectors statues or something, when we finally do, they are SHIT, Why the production guys gave the rights to produce them is beyond me because they look fuck all like their real life alter ego's. Then look at the Buffy figures, another Whedon franchise, and the figures are near perfect likenesses.

THIS:

Is supposed to be a likeness of Nathan Fillion...:

[Dr. Evil] "Khan, you look well, young. Mal you look.... Riiiiiiight."[/Dr Evil]

They have also recently released a Tom Baker (4th Doctor) and K-9 figure/collectors statue. Obviously you cant scan Bakers face, hes too old, but the sculpt is really good. Not perfect, but its a good sculpt that looks like its owner. Probably because its an exlusive collectors item and more time and effort put into it. But again, the same problem arises; How can you recreate the likeness of somebody who has aged, you start from scratch.

The fourth Doctor statue/figure. One of he best from scratch sculpts i have seen recently. Not including McFarlane, we all know they rule the universe.
