New Trek Series?

a few months ago i read about a new trek series being pitched to CBS, Star Trek: Cardinal. i read up on it, it sounded interesting. whether or not it will ever get made is another matter but im such a trek addict i couldnt help wanting to know more. i put my new site online a few weeks ago, it's pretty basic but is being updated day by day, bit by bit. today i added an interview with Sal Lagonia, the man behind the ST:Cardinal project. sorry if this post seems spammy but it is star trek related and my site is the only site on the web to have this interview (done by e-mail) so i thought it was worth postin a link.

Ok, all I got from reading that article was this:

  • There is a captain
  • There is a ship
  • It's at the Federation border
Wow....what originality! It's sure to be a hit!

thats a bit harsh. im still undecided. part of me says "any TV trek's better than no trek", "its gotta b better than enterprise" and he does make some pretty good points. the other part of me says "no chance, this is never gonna happen!" Thats why i wanted to do the interview, to find out more

thats a bit harsh.

How is that a bit harsh? That interview gave absolutely no information about a new series other than what anyone could already guess. The "creator" mentioned how he spent "3 years of research" coming up with the idea and yet tells us nothing about it.

Here's my idea for a new Trek series:

It will have a captain and crew on a starship in space.

That's it so far! Didn't take me 3 years to come up with that! :wtf:

i forgot to add a link to his site at the bottom (sorry), just added it. if u want more details on the series go there. i have nothing to do with the project itself, just thought learnin a bit about the man behind it and his views on trek might b interestin to some people.

I don't see any evidence that this is or has been under active consideration by anyone at CBS who'd be in a position to make a difference.

Sometimes a lack of trek is a good thing. Think about it: Wouldn't you like to see a quality product that is well thought out, or would you like CBS putting out some junk just to make a buck?

A quick google doesn't seem to reveal much information about this "script writing experience he claims to have", the fact that he's unable to spell professional strikes me as odd (when claiming to be a professional scriptwriter).

Just some nobody try to be someone off the back of trek.

This show will never be made.

From his website

http://www.startrekcardinal.com/

Captain Michael Winters, a former naval infintry soldier and now a career Border Patrol officer, who earlier in life was considered a great prodigy by his training officers, is not concerned about the end of humanity... In fact, he's not concerned about much at all. He's a man who looks in the mirror every morning at a stranger who gets more and more distant all the time. He's fed up with his life, with taking abuse from beurocratic admirals, with doing a thankless job that gets more and more thankless every day.
I'll be blunt, reading that, I conclude the following:

1) he wants to make BSG

2) His ideas are awful

3) his show will never be made

I checked out the website...it reeks of fanboy crap. Plus the ship is ugly, and would never fly as the hero ship for a legitimate Star Trek series...I mean, does the Cardinal have to look like a cardinal? Ugh.

Paramount has a big job: resurrecting the damaged Star Trek brand. It hasn't been badly damaged and hopefully Trek XI will be enough to repair the damage done by Berman & Braga. Star Trek is like a painting that has been allowed to get cracked and worn. It needs restoration. But the canvas hasn't been slashed to ribbons by a lunatic, which is what Star Trek Cardinal (groan) sounds like. I don't know who this guy is, but he certainly shows no depth in his understanding of what Trek should be. The interviews with Abrams and Orci have been much more substantive and on-target.

What Trek does NOT need right now is some half-assed stab at a new TV show. Fortunately, I'm sure the people in charge also understand this. They've already embarked on the ideal way of bringing Star Trek back to its former glory and they're not going to make such a basic, idiotic mistake to start doing damage to the brand all over again.

There probably will be a Star Trek TV series again. If the movie is a big hit, of course that success will be capitalized on, in every way conceivable. But the TV series will spin off of what made the movie a success and some bozo coming in from left field won't be part of the plan.

"any TV trek's better than no trek"
I don't think so.

Exactly. It's possible for Star Trek to be so hideously damaged that it will become radioactive to both the audience and to the suits who have to be the ones to greenlight millions of dollars in funding for it. The situation is not that bad at this point, but it's possible that it could get that bad, and allowing fanboy bullshit like this Cardinal nonsense is just the way to kill Trek dead.

Star Trek has been mismanaged for years now. The solution is to manage it well, not destroy it utterly.

This is the lead character:

Captain Michael Winters. Human male, ex-Naval Infantry . Winters is a man with a heart of gold that's so covered in sarcasm it's hard to see. He always does what's right, but sometimes needs a little proding to do it. He's a natural leader who has the intelligence to out-think a brilliant Romulan commander, yet he probably has the scientific intellect of a three-year old. He will go to T'Noir for advice and council long before he goes to anyone else, though he shows a tendency to speak to Naomi lately. Speaks in military terms and constantly uses slang and... shall we say... colorfull metaphors. Winters is a unique addition to the pantheon of captains Star Trek has seen. He is much more blue-colar and down to Earth. Just as Picard always let his inner-scientist show, and Sisko his inner-engineer, Winters will often make his former occupation as a soldier bleed through into his decission-making.

His relationship with Naomi and Sabrina is one of the more complex in the crew. They annoy the hell out of him, yet they are the family he never can have. In a true case of love/hate, the man wants nothing more than to have some privacy, yet he'd take a bullet for either of them without thinking.

Oh and the forum is more f**king delusional than TNZ here - they are already discussing the next series after this one has aired:

As of right now, we will accept any scripts, though we would prefer they were registered with the WGA. I will warn you that any non-union or non-represented writers are doing this for free, and shouldn't expect anything more than seeing their idea on the screen.

Wow - he's openly trying to rip off struggling new writers! nice... (and another reason this would never get made - this would never get pass legal...)

It will never never happen - and part of the reason that it will never happen (besides the fact that the guy doesn't seem to have any talent) is that the studio legal people are never going to OK a show cooked up on an open talk forum - that leaves the doors up for all sorts of legal action, because the authorship (and the profits) can be disputed.

He's a fanboy talking smack (if I've got that american phrase right).

A big question is: Would it be set in the 2380s, or afterward?

I think its already too late for that, IMO.

In all honesty, as much as I love Star Trek, it has been a good thing having no Star Trek right now because for so long TV was overly saturated with it and that only served to bury Star Trek.

What they need to do is wait......bide their time and come up with something quality and at a time when TV is ready for Star Trek again.

I hope Star Trek XI can do the trick, I'm not holding my breath but I am cautiously optimistic. I want a really, really good Star Trek show to be launched but it will have to be the right idea at the right time if it is truely going to work. I am not sure that time is now.

Sounds like someone promoting an idea that has nothing to do with reality, like that guy who was going around saying he would be the perfect actor for the new Prince of Persia movie, and that the studio exec's were considering him, but he was just a nobody wacko who never was in consideration. CBS and Paramount would never have anything to do with this guys idea.
