New TREK already reflected in real life

We all know about how the TOS influnced tech and styles - communicators/cellphones, Uhura's ear piece/bluetooth, McCoy's biobed/MRI etc...we could go on forever.

Well, many have complained about the new design asthetic of the new bridge for Trek XI. I thought I would take the time to illustrate how real world design is moving towards that aesthetic and in fact JJ's take on the bridge may well be seen by future Trekkers as a remarkably insightful take on future design.

So, we are used to this for the Enterprise bridge, not bright, subdued for the most part...

The new bridge, here, is by contrast bright and white, almost like a clean room...

We all know the rush to white was inspired by Apple, in fact JJ mentions it...

So, think for a minute...what are most of us exposed to that for the most part is equivalent to a bridge or control center? How about the interior of our cars. Granted we have no phasers or deflectors, but we do have control of a machine that can transport us. The one thing that virtually all cars have in common when you buy them is that the interiors are fairly dark in color, a bit subdued of an environment. Something like this...

Well, the forthcoming Chevy Volt electric car gets rid of the gloomy all grey and foregoes the lame wood trim for something a bit more contemporary and bright, one would say almost iPod-ish...

Now it is not nearly as white or bright asa the new Ent bridge, but it shows a bold move in that direction by a car company who is not known for these bold moves.

I honestly think if you take away those gooseneck lamps and 2 joysticks at that standup station and also get rid of that row of vanity lights at the back of the bridge you have what looks like a very cool update that is very faithful to the original yet new and fresh....

You can't have a car that white, because the reflection off the front window would disturb the driver's sight.

Someone nicknamed the new Enterprise the USS Apple

MacEnterprise? ;) Good analogy, and I think they did a nice job updating the fun, colorful feel of TOS while making it look like the future, not the 60s. The aesthetics were the one element that had me the most worried, I didn't know if they could pull it off.

Even if they approrpriated Apple aesthetics, they're used seldom enough in SF that it still looks original. "Eve" from WALL*E is one example of the use, but mainly SF is still mired in the dark gothic look popularized by Batman, Blade Runner and The Matrix.

Uh, I have a white car. What reflection, I can see just fine.

Well despite that, that is the picture of the production car interior as published by GM and not the concept which was far more white. So, it will be that white.

I'm talking about the interior, specifically the upper side of the dashboard.

I remember thinking that in some of the previous films, I thought the bridge was too dark - not enough lighting and it was hard to see what was occurring. I think that when we see this film, the bright lighting will work very well. Things are going to show up more and we will able to follow the characters and the action better.

But the gooseneck lamps are the big, cool nod to the original Pike-era bridge! They must stay!

I dunno why everyone is comparing this bridge to the one from the main run of the TV series. They should be comparing it to the bridge in the original pilot:

Wow I've just had an epiphany! I know that they're wearing the series uniforms rather than the pilot ones, but is it possible that the scene we're looking at is from the Pike era and that there are other versions of the bridge in the film more faithful to the show with the muted colours and all? We know that it will feature Pike and the Enterprise under his command so why not?

^^^ I agree. I think we will see an interpretation of the Cage/WNMHGB time period, with a bit of evolutionary influence from Ent. (and a bit of Syd Mead's Phase II renderings from the mid-'70s)

I suspect you mean Mike Minor (or Ralph McQuarrie, if you are thinking Planet of the Titans). Syd Mead's one and only connection with Star Trek was to redesign V'ger for ST:TMP. :)

I agree, but not only the joysticks... get rid of the hostess station altogether.
The future is bright!
Out of the mouths of babes, words of truth. JJ Abrams has said many times that Star Trek's optimism was a great influence. I, for one, am happy that: "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades." :techman:

The "goosenecks" indeed have to stay. A nice homage to The Cage, and I'm surprised more haven't seen that.

Not really faithful. That's like saying any shirt with two sleeves is your size.

The bridge has been said to be oval, not round.

I'm guessing the standup station is for Uhura, and she should be behind Kirk, not nearly alongside him.

Behind Kirk is someone in blue, so it might be the science station, so we're back to TMP with Spock being in the wrong place.

I'm also very curious about where the entrance(s?) to the bridge are.

They haven't stuck as close to the original as they have with the uniforms (which I think are GREAT if you have to change them at all), and that's a mistake.

I'm still going, but it could have been better. (Of course, who knows exactly WHAT we're seeing right now. Probably better to wait and see before deciding on stuff...claims of faithfulness or otherwise.)

EDIT:
If anything, the gooseneck lamps echo early versions of the bridge. And you want to get rid of them to make it more accurate?

Ooh. I like that, and I'm not typically an iPod-ish type of person.
