New Top Gear

I doubt it'll put paid to the show saying Top Gear is one the Beeb's top shows, I guess we shall have to see what happens when the full facts become known. They could suspended him for the rest of the season and just go with the other presenters.

yes please.

If the BBC sack him, the other two will quit and they'll go and do a very similar show elsewhere,

5th Gear must be shitting themselves...

Except they can't - apparently the reason they've pulled the last three episodes of the season (and they have done that) is because they're applying his suspension to all the pre-filmed stuff as well! (They actually say this in their announcement- they pulled the whole episode for Sunday because otherwise he "would still have appeared in pre-filmed segnments")

Which is a pretty weird definition of "suspension" to me.

I didn't realise people still watched Top Gear. I thought it was just daily mail readers and Ukip voters who didn't quite realise that every single bit of it is staged and badly acted

Clarkson: mate, mate, check out what I've done to May's exhaust
Hammond: giggle giggle
May: Clarkson you cock, I did not anticipate that you would do this thing to my exhaust that you did
Hammond: giggle giggle
Clarkson: sorry mate, I'm just being a ruddy top bloke, mate

Can't they just go on and do the show without him? I like Hammond far more than Clarkson, anyway.

Of course people still watch it, being a left voting, Guardian reader, I do watch it and find it regularly entertaining regardless of what is staged or not.

Lefty vegetarian tree hugging never bothered to learn to drive Top Gear fan here. About the only thing I have in common with Clakson is a liking for obscure 70's rock...

I wish I could get a job talking bollocks and pratting around with my mates...

No, I'm pretty sure they can't, because, well, it's my understanding that the show isn't property of the BBC.

From what I've heard, after the Beeb cancelled the original 1977 version of Top Gear, Clarkson (and Andy Wilman) acquired the rights to the show, independently developed the show's current format, and presently hold the actual copyright for the property.

If that's the case, BBC can't make Top Gear without Clarkson's cooperation, but he can still make Top Gear without them.

I'm of the opinion that Clarkson's antics of the last couple of years, has been part of an effort on his part to get BBC to drop the show, so that he can take the show to a more profitable venue.

Huh. For some reason, I remember reading that he had sold his rights to the show, and that included the licensing and marketing, which would mean the Beeb would own it in full sometime later this year.

It's certainly possible, but it seems unlikely that he'd give up the leverage that comes with ownership. Clarkson has used his Top Gear ownership to get dozens of other projects produced (motoring related and other), and without Top Gear as a bargaining chip, many of these projects probably wouldn't have ever seen the light of day.

^Just Googled it. He sold his rights to Top Gear in 2012, for over 13 million pounds.
In 2012, BBC Worldwide paid £8.4 million for Clarkson’s stake in a joint venture which had owned the commercial rights to Top Gear. Clarkson had received dividends - £4.86 million in 2012 - as a co-owner of the company, Bedder 6. Under the terms of the new contract, Clarkson now receives a seven-figure fee from BBC Worldwide and the corporation owns the rights to the Top Gear format, name and intellectual property

I guess if you have that kind of retirement fund, you don't give a crap if anyone fires you.

Maybe the BBC could do what 'Have i got news for you' did, and have a different celeb host the show each week with Hammond and May.

I doubt they'd stay. They're friends and the on screen chemistry is important to the show. They'd probably all take the show elsewhere under a new name.

For me, this has to come down to context - if there was a punch, was this an argument with the management and Clarkson was standing up for himself and the show OR was it the big star throwing a tantrum at an employee and bullying in the workplace.

Either way, getting physical is wrong, but we need to know exctly what happened before passing judgment.

I read on FB someone post about how BBC has stabbed Clarkson in the back and how its Political Correctness gone mad etc etc fucking etc

:scream::scream::scream::scream::scream:

Lets ignore all the past stuff and get down to the fact of this lovely matter. If you hit someone who works with you/for you then your ass gets fired. I don't care if he's makes a TV show that some people like, the rules do not get changed just for them.

 Everytime I read anything on social media these days I feel like my soul is being chipped away  I really hate people.

It might depend on the exact circumstances and what the victim wants to do. After all if it was an unprovoked attack he could easily report Clarkson to to the police for assault.
