"New" Top Gear 2016

I finally braved watching Episode 2 of the Top so called Gear.

Better than the first episode, but then that wouldn't exactly take much. Without breaking it down bit by bit, Chris Evans is the weak link. He's absolutely dreadful. Everyone else has potential if they went and made their own Top Gear instead of aping what was done before by Hammond, May, and Clarkson. It's like watching a copy that's not synced quite right. It's putting the picture up but it's not quite hitting the beats.

Retool with LeBlanc (very surprised how inoffensive he is, I was thinking he was going to be the worst), Chris Harris, and maybe one or two others. Evans has no chemistry with anyone and his very presence on screen sucks whatever enjoyment to be had right out. How anyone can consider him and improvement over Clarkson is beyond me. Clarkson might have been a bit of a twat, but he was a lovable twat while Evans is just an annoying twat.

In the first episode, with Chris Evans running around shouting his head off and LeBlanc trotting out every US-UK joke in the book, I felt very aware that I was watching the B-team in action. The BBC have made the classic mistake of assuming that the presence of big names will make a big TV show (whereas Clarkson, Hammond and May were all comparatively low-key figures at the turn of the millennium) - when in fact it was the chemistry between the presenters, developed organically over a decade, that really made it work. The attempts to replicate this on the spot with the new people thrown together shows up the re-tooled series as a sad imitation of former glory.

Many of the old fans take this as confirmation of what they always knew - the BBC luvvies never truly understood Top Gear in the first place.

Of course they did, that's why they let Clarkson get away with so much shit? They just don't know how to recreate it without recreating it by trying to throw similar set ups in without the people who have the relationship the old guys did. Though to be fair, I'm enjoying the new series but I gave up on the old show years ago. They seem to be improving, given time they might settle in to something different enough to not be a cheap copy and have presenters with a relationship that works for the show. But any show needs time to bed in.

Eddie Jordan is ok and Matt LeBlanc was pretty good in episode three. However my favourite presenter so far is Rory Reid. He presents Extra Gear, but last week he was on the main show and due to popular demand he will be in all future shows, but apparently only in the pre-recorded materials.

Rory Reid is developing nicely - good segment on the new Tesla tonight and free of El Clarksonenti's prejudice against electric vehicles. Nice bit on the Aston Martin Falcon (or Vulcan? Accent issues) as well. The rest of the show still feels stilted... And havng never watched much Bear Grylls am amazed at his lisp.

Loved Rory Reid's segment on the new Tesla too. Was bored with the stars in the rally car segment, but the second half of the race against the train was the best part for me. Glad the train won.

The Aston Martin was called a Vulcan, not a Falcon ;)

So, watched my first episode of this new iteration and felt the hosting fell flat on all counts. They're just not very interesting to listen to. This had an interesting side-effect of the cars standing out more as being stars, rather than the hosts who faded into the background. All it really did was make me wonder why we're listening to these guys and why we should care about their opinions.

And the Stars in a Rally Car segment: Too long. And it made me sad when I realized we wouldn't be seeing the classic test track layout anymore.

Numerous stories have Matt LeBlanc threatening to quit if Chris Evans stays.

Story 1
Story 2
Story 3

Also some story today hinting LeBlanc is in a relationship with one of the production crew.

Two of your links are just quoting the Sun article though, and as a Murdoch paper the Sun takes any chance to hit the BBC with a stick because the wrinkled old Aussie tosspot hates the idea of publically-owned television.

Again, I think it's showing signs of slow improvement - last night's segments were fine, Chris wasn't TOO annoying (the lightweight track car segment was good) and I actually agree with him on the Rolls-Royce issues (both the ugly arse of the Dawn and preferring the classic Roller). LeBlanc is still good (they even gave him one of the best "Some say..." Stig lines EVER last night) and Rory Reid continues to impress. Good guests on the SIARC bit.

Sun or no, if there's a kernel of truth, they're already fighting an uphill battle just trying to replace the other three, any more controversy will sink the ship.

I watched a couple episodes and that was about it. I'm aware the new eps are coming on each Monday night, I just don't care anymore. I'm waiting for GT now.

I've had no problem with Evans over the years, I found him fine. But, I just don't think Top Gear was a good fit for him.

Am I in the minority?
To my mind Leblanc is just dreadful on this show.Lamentably bad,no charm and uncomfortable to watch.
Chris Evans is not the problem here!
