New To Voyager

Both extremes of campy and self-serious are unwatchable, really. But I don't think Voyager is campy, it's just 'Light', which there is nothing wrong with.

I need a Voy fan to sell me DS9. I was too bored watching first season. when does it get "good"?

I like season 1 of Deep Space Nine more than any one season of Voyager, but it is the weakest season of the show. The first three episodes of season 2 are great, but I'd say the show gets consistently great during the final third of the season.

The last episode of season 2 introduces a big bad that it takes 5 seasons to put in their place.

The House of Quark in season three has a Ferengi founding a Klingon House.

Worf joins the cast at the start of season 4 during a massive firefight.

Thank you guys for your perspectives.

I just read up on it. it seems like a strong show. I guess it comes down to taste. I like the Voyager premise. DS9 is a central spot and ideas I am not keen on BUT I think it's worth giving it a shot.

DS9 has Garak, the greatest ST character ever. It also has Major Kira, for my money the best conceived and best-acted female ST character.

Minus? The ferengi episodes are among the worst attempts of humour in ST history. There are some baffling plot and character choices among the way. And Avery Brooks is a black Shatner.

The magnificent Ferengi becomes entirely surreal when you mentally strip the prosthetics and understand that they are really squaring off against Iggy Pop.

The Ferengi episodes were supposed to be Funtime, but too often there was absolutely No Fun.

In fact, I was usually looking for the joke with a microscope.

Well back when DSN was being created a lot of people weren't keen on the whole space station setting, but DSN turned this into an advatage and explored several races in more detail than the other shows could. It added to the universe

What I like about DS9 is the station itself. I've always liked transient spaces. Big train stations, airports, hotels.. a space station is all that X 10. Everything comes through a space station. Merchants, world leaders, starfleet, regular folk doing regular non-Fed business.. it feels like the real world and not the sanitized life we see on starships.

And the setting for the space station.. on the one hand they are at the backhole of the quadrant, far from earth and the perfect Federation. And on the other hand they are at the absolute center of conflict and politics for their corner of the world, a corner that becomes increasingly important to far off earth as the series develops. You feel both these things, how crucial they are and how distanced they are.

Because they are not hitting a planet a week DS9 develops the main races which we've seen briefly in the other series and it's great, fully fleshed out worlds and histories. Bajor, Cardassia, Trill, Ferenginar.. we get to see all kinds of people and history from these worlds and the worlds themselves not just for one episode but over a 7 year period. And the new main races they introduce get the same level of development. A huge contribution to Trek in this respect.

Anyway, you should watch it. The first season is slow (I don't find it so, but that's the common understanding.. for all Trek really). There are huge changes and developments as it goes along :)

I thought Tom's speech to B'Lanna at the end of Lineage was really sweet. Workforce was a good one... And by good I mean Janeway in that spectacular blue blazer and skirt:) Though once again, she gets no love:( Human Error: The beginning of the weirdest coupling on any show I've ever seen. What were the writers thinking?

They were almost out of there, they didn't need him shutted up.

I think it's more possible that they were punishing Jeri for some reason we don't know about.

Their scenes (even though Chakotay was a hologram) were really awkward to watch. Not looking forward to eight more episodes of awkwardness. It doesn't even make sense. Those two haven't had any big scenes together for any kind of relationship to develop. Whereas both of them had lengthy screen time with Janeway so either of them being with her would make sense.

I might not be a J/C shipper but I'd much prefer it over C/7.

Holy crap! I only have eight episodes left!! Sadness:(
