New to TOS

If someone has grown up with only TV shows and movies from the last couple decades, then something older can be very hard to get used to.

At the time of Star Trek, television was still relatively young, and TV shows were not frenetically paced and filled with action like today's genre shows have become.

For quite a while, TV productions were more like stage plays than movies in a lot of ways, so I would suggest approaching Star Trek from that perspective. I would also argue that TV science fiction was more influenced by literary SF than it is today.

Also try other shows from that time, such as The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone.

Okay, I've watched the first 4 episodes. I was really confused about the plots for Charlie X and Where No Man Has Gone Before. Why did they bring Charlie on board and what exactly was he? Next episode, what was going on? Also, why were Kirk and Spock wearing different shirts? Where was McCoy and Uhura?

I really liked The Naked Time. How did the people on the planet contract the crazy disease in the first place?

Btw, Yeoman Janice Rand looks a lot like Barbara Eden.

Man I envy you. Enjoy the episodes. There are some real gems it there. There are also some stinkers but even the stinkers have some good stuff in them.

As one who came to TOS as a child, during the very first reruns, I wonder if we're not looking at a rather profound difference in the way audiences watch TV, late 1960s vs. today.

I agree wholeheartedly. Not just between the '60s and today, but generational - between the 60's, the mid '80s and today - three generations. It's all so different that it only makes sense that there are some generational biases. I still prefer TOS over all the others. I believe the stories are more relevant and better told. I also understand that the younger generations don't agree. No matter to me.

After attempting to watch episode-to-episode, I've made the decision to skim through each episode summary and watch based on if it interests me. I plan on doing this for seasons 2 and 3. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm giving up. I also want to watch some of the movies so any recommendations would be great

I watched Yesterday Is Tomorrow. Really enjoyed it! When the guard is accidentally beamed up and Kirk is like "Leave him there." Spock: I think he is quite content with staying where he is. Meanwhile McCoy has to physically pry the gun from his hand. So funny!

Is it a generational thing? Maybe. I do love I Dream Of Jeannie, Bewitched, and The Addams Family, and they were all on during the 60's so maybe it's just me.

I've given it some thought and considering I only have 18 episodes left, I might as well watch them all. Besides, if I had stopped watching every series I ever started, I wouldn't be addicted to as many great shows! Then my life would have no meaning

It's not that I'm finding the episodes confusing (except for the first few) it's that I don't find them interesting. I had the same problem with the first season of Voyager though.

That might be your problem; too used to the first season or two of the spinoffs being full of stinkers :P stick it out with TOS. Even if you never go back and watch it again, you'll have watched something very important in TV terms.

Well, at least you were open-minded enough to give it a try, which is a lot more than can be said for a lot of fans of newer Trek. (Star Trek being all about tolerance and open-mindedness, after all )

I personally live in a mid-century time warp and generally prefer movies and TV shows from that era, so TOS is my go-to when I'm in the mood for science fiction.

I did enjoy a couple episodes: The Naked Time, This Side of Paradise, Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Journey To Babel, The Trouble With Tribbles, and All Our Yesterdays.

I found a lot of the villains to be really creepy: Ruck, the Creepy Nancy monster from The Man Trap, the creepy kid alien who used the big-headed decoy. Oh, and the creepy alien children and the Grups. For the 60's, they did a good job in the "monster department."

And who knows? Maybe in a few months or a year I might try it again. I actually prefer the TOS crew to Voyager's crew. Give or take a few characters
