new three stooges movie

I saw that yesterday and thought for sure it had to be a joke. Too early for April Fools Day?

Sean Penn playing Larry from the Three Stooges? Come on. That can't be real.

Ya know, I've already seen several online articles that are totally freaked out at the idea of Sean Penn in a comedic role, particularly as a Stooge. Have they completely forgotten the role that pretty much put Penn on the map?

Penn was Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" fer chrissakes.

Comedy... even over the top comedy... is something he can do, and do well. And it isn't really surprising that he'd be willing to do such a lowbrow film, now that he's so firmly established himself as a serious actor. After some of the deadly serious roles he's played over the last decade, it isn't hard to understand that the man might actually want to loosen up a tad, and indulge in a bit of mindless comedy, if only for a change of scene.

Yeah...I agree...I'm not that interested.

Especially since the article claims the movie will be a single narrative. And the least successful Stooges projects were the feature lengths. I think their brand of comedy was best in the shorts.

Well I find the original Stooges to be incredibly annoying and boring, so I imagine I won't be a fan of a new version. While I do appreciate well-done slapstick comedy, I always found the Stooges to be more jarring than funny.

Oh, I have no doubt Sean Penn can do comedy. The man is an acting genius.

I just think the role sounds ridiculous, and I can't imagine him doing it.

What's next, Anthony Hopkins farting Volare in a Hollywood Knights remake??

There was a tv biopic of the Stooges a few years ago. I didn't see it all but what I did see it was really well cast. Michael Chiklis was Curly, Evan Handler (from Sex & The City and Californication) was Larry, Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire, Entourage, John From Cincinnatti) was Moe.

Not sure if the Stooges suit anything other than a short movie format but I can see the Farrelly brothers making a good one - Dumb, Dumber and Dumber Still? I kinda like the idea of Penn for a Stooge, though I think he'd be better for Moe, given how bad tempered he comes across as.

This could be another Sgt Bilko/ Pink Panther type disaster but at least Steve Martin isn't involved. I suppose if you can get beyond the fact that it's not the original Stooges involved, it could be a funny movie in its own right.
