I somehow missed that the new Starfleet phasers, first seen in 2385 flashbacks, have ditched the "dustbuster" Gene Roddenberry don't-make-it-look-like-a-gun mandate.

The Mars guards and 7 had them. I was hoping they're an alternate version for security people and rangers, but it seems to be the only type so far.

It's like the TOS phasers and the TNG phasers had phaser sex and made phaser babies. I'm pretty sure Seven uses Starfleet phaser rifles in 'Stardust city Rag'. Those guns looked awesome.

Meh.. I’ll withhold judgment until next full on Starfleet based series.

I see what Agony_Boothb is getting at. It's a pretty nice try at harmonizing two fundamentally different designs.

I'm not crazy about it, but it does have some design similarities to other 24th century phasers. I guess I'd like it better if the shape was more like its immediate predecessors rather than a throwback to a century or so earlier.

I wonder how long it takes to 3D print one of those?

    Using 21st century 3D printer or 24th century 3D printer? :D

Maybe the front segment that looks like a TNG phaser detaches like a phaser I? The black, rounded segment at top rear could be the handle?

Probably wishful thinking, but I’d like it better if this were a heavy duty assault phaser.

It’s possible that these circa-2380’s phasers and rifles (while new to us) are now outdated in 2399, hence why Rios has surplus rifles on his ship.

It looks over-designed, like someone was trying just a bit TOO hard to add lots of extra detailed fiddly bits.

It looks like an evolution of the late-TNG movies style phaser, plonked on the top of a big, chunky pistol grip. I agree with Jadeb; I can see how more-or-less the whole top section could lift off in order to become something that looks more like the sidearms we are familiar with from the TNG era.

If the phaser in the photo was, say, a more specialist heavy-duty variant intended for armed security and tactical teams that would make sense but, in truth, it looks more like it’s detived from the TNG Romulan disruptor pistol than something from the Federation design lineage.

I for one am OK with moving away from the Gene's Vision dustbuster era and making the death rays look like guns again.

I think it does a good job of combining the traditional swept back phaser look with the curved TNG late movie version, as well as avoid an obvious barrel. As much as it as a cool idea to have them not look like weapons, there's a reason they've gotten more and more gun shaped again, due to how uncomfortable they were to hold and aim.

It was never really a big issue for me, but I always preferred when phasers looked different to guns. No recoil etc.

Why is the grip so far forward?
