New Starfest interview with Avery Brooks

New interview with Avery Brooks. Some of the comments made me chuckle.

The Hair Wasn’t His Fault

As many fans know, Brooks never wanted to have the hair he did in the first two seasons. It seems that from the start, he always wanted to be Hawk in space.

DS9 Is Like Us

Brooks has always been vocal about how he thinks what a special phenomenon the show DS9 is. He talked about how the show really wasn’t about what we want to be, but what we are like now, and the hope that we still have as we try to sort our problems out.

What Episodes Stand Out?

“The pilot, of course” smiled Brooks, “because it was the first one.” He then answered again with “Somewhere Beyond the Stars”, a fan favorite, and an episode he directed.

Favorite Vacation Place?

Here, Brooks made the crowd roar with laughter when he pronounced “We are not on this planet to vacation! Vacation? I’ve got work to do!”

Cirroc Lofton

At the end of the Q&A, Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) came on stage, and there was a touching reunion of sorts where they talk about the father/son relationship in the show not being a fake. Lofton’s parents had been going through a divorce at the time, and Brooks became his real life father figure, as well as his stage father, and Brooks agreed that he viewed Lofton as a son.

All in all, it was rather touching, and an excellent segue to Lofton’s own Q&A.

This was one of the cornerstones of the series for me, and one of the many reasons why I love this version of Star Trek more than any of the rest. The relationship between Ben and Jake, father and son, was brilliant. Brilliantly written, and equally as brilliantly played by Brooks and Lofton. When I first saw that the series was going to feature a kid, I got a Wil Wheaton/Wes Crusher flashback/horror show and feared the worst, but as much as that always made me cringe in TNG, it was completely the opposite on DS9. Everything about the relationship seemed far more genuine than anything that was done with Wes.

After the TNG Blu Rays are finished I sincerely hope that they move onto DS9, and if they do, I really can't wait for the VAM. Extras like this would be absolute gold to me.

Nice read, thanks.

Completely agree. After really disliking Wesley, I didn't expect much from Jake, but I think they did a pretty good job with him (although the last couple of seasons weren't his best). The relationship he had with his dad was really nice and seemed believable.

Also agree. Their relationship never seemed fake. And I loved the physical affection Sisko/Brooks showed Jake/Cirroc. Still don't see that often on TV.
