New Star Trek Fan Please Help

Hey guys I just registered because i'm a new Star Trek fan. I've always been a Star Wars guy and without really giving it a chance always dismissed Star Trek as the other space movie. I'm ready to let go of those feelings and delve into the Star Trek universe.

Please help me in where to begin. I've seen some of the original series and was thinking of buying the new blu ray of season 1 remastered. I also know a blu ray movie pack of movies 1-6 is coming out this week and I thought about getting that instead. Also The Next Generation seems to be really popular.

There is just so much Star Trek content out there I don't know what to start with. I mean if someone asked me what star wars movies to watch I would most certainly steer them away from The Phantom Menace as their first star wars experience. To me Star Trek should include Spok and Kirk but that's really only because it's all I know, i'm open to the other series or movies.

Basically, the best place to start would be the original series. You'll get a feel of the crew and the premise behind Star Trek. As for the original 5 movies, they pretty much all tie into each other so it's best you watch them in order. I personally like The Wrath of Kahn and The Voyage Home (parts 2 and 4). The first movie is meh, The Search for Spock (part 3) is good and The Final Frontier (part 5) is bleh.

Don't forget Part 6, The Undiscovered Country, which is brilliant!!!

I agree with almost everybody here that the best place to start is the The Original Series. I also have a few friends that are hoping to get into Trek after watching the movie and so here are the steps that I have prepared for you guys:

1. Watch five Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) episodes in the following order:
- Space Seed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBC502AYPWU)
- Mirror Mirror (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coZ0ivEfVFk)
- The Naked Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM1OimZYl28)
- The City on the Edge of Forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31VAmaz-OwQ) --> My favorite episode
- The Trouble with Tribbles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4utsDOD8FDk)
- The Menagerie Part I & II
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIB8mQmgRHU) --> only episode that shows Christopher Pike

2. Once you feel comfortable enough, proceed to watch the Star Trek movies (in the following order):
- Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan (sets 15 years after TOS)
- Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock (leaves where ST2 left off)
- Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home (leaves where ST3 left off)

What do you think, Vox? Let me know if you're going to follow through with this. Warning: Once you start, there's no turning back! Guaranteed to get you hooked!

Ok here's the update. I've been watching TOS and i'm hooked. It's really good and even though it's 40+ years old it's brand new to me. The remastered audio and CGI really goes a long way in not making it seem dated.

In addition to regularly watching TOS i've been tuning into the scifi channel because they seem to run reruns often. Right now they have a lot of Enterprise on and so far i've been dissapointed with that series but hey with so much content i'm not going to like them all. I caught some of TNG on youtube as well as some of the few reruns on the scifi channel and that series seems really good and it's a lot more modern then TOS.

I'm probably going to start with some of the movies soon and i'll start with The Wrath of Khan and move right into movies 2 and 3. I have a long way to go and a lot of content to watch.

My advice is to sample a little of each series - watch an early ep, then maybe a later ep, and see if you like the characters/direction. Each show really is kind of a different animal. The nice thing about Trek is that while you don't have to know anything about the universe to get into it, you might be surprised how interesting a universe the shows actually do create. :)

I recommend the same :)

When peole have asked me I usually point them to DS9 first, starting at season four.

TNG can be a bit hit and miss for newcomers and the first two seasons haven't aged well at all. Voyager tends to be the same, but as it's typically stand alone episodes it might be easier to get into (as long as you know off the bat they're stranded).

I've found that people I know like to avoid TOS, but when they catch u with the modern series they're more open to it's charm. I'm sure someone will bash me for saynig this - but it's clearly product of it's time and not the easiest way to get into Trek.

The movies are a lot easier to get into (especially the ongoing narrative with II-IV) and it helps that II and VI don't seem to age too much.

Since I am also a Star Wars fan, I found Deep Space Nine to be the best, hardcore epic space battles just like in Star Wars. The story arc was the best too, each episode seemed more interconnected than TNG.

the good thing about this "reboot" is that you don't need to start anywhere other than this movie. watching everything else just enhances your knowledge of Trek but this film is a good starting point since a new time line has been created.

My best suggestion is Paramount released two DVDs on Tuesday that they're calling The Best of Star Trek. At the moment you can choose between TNG and TOS. I recommend, if you want to get your feet wet, picking up these two DVD sets (they're 12.99 a piece) and seeing if you like them and then going from there.

Vox, I was in a similar situation as you about 2 years ago. I've always been a sci-fi fan but, I had only caught a few episodes of Trek through the years. I really got INTO Trek at that time. So far I've gone through all of TNG, all the movies, and a few episodes of all of the other series. For me, it's been a great ride thus far. Best of luck!

Start with the Enterprise Episode "Broken Bow" set 100 years before Kirk. Then move to TOS, movies 1-6, TNG DS9 Voyager. First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis. it'll take you about 700 hours. let me know what you think when you're done
