"It's sad to see this rip-off series going on the air, particular for us fans who have been there from the beginning."
"I think he should have named it something else, maybe Star Fleet, because the new show will be so obviously different from the original."
"Outranged fans are beseching producers... to halt plans."

Honestly it sounds like the fans have spoken, and this whole Next Generation thing is gonna be a big flop.

Yeah - and they're having an actor with a 'porn-stache' as a Trek character? Man, GR must just need the money ;)

And you show this to Discovery haters, trying to prove a point, and still they'll say 'no no, this is different!!'.....:rolleyes:
Back in the 80s it would have made some sense to think a new cast couldn't work as well. Even the TNG crew themselves were skeptical. But after 4 spinoffs, all of which were successful and at least half of which were very good, there's no reason to bet against them, particularly one with this much support from CBS.

So they're not wrong, it is different. They're even less rational this time.

Rationality is not the strength of this fan base. Not by a long shot.

To be fair, you run into the same reactions in every fandom.

"It's not a REAL Planet of the Apes movie unless they're wearing the original make-ups and costumes. None of this newfangled CGI motion-capture nonsense!"

"Lynda Carter is the only REAL Wonder Woman!"

"Nobody will ever replace Raymond Burr as PERRY MASON!"

"The Brendan Fraser MUMMY movies are the only real MUMMY movies!"

"That's not how it was in the original comic books!"

(I swear to God, I've seen all these arguments this year alone.)

And later with DS9: "You can't do a STAR TREK series on a space station! They're boldly staying in one place!"

That one kind of turned out to be prophetic, though, given that the producers added a ship in season 3 and the series-defining storyline was a war that mostly took place everywhere the station wasn't.
