New Sonic Screwdriver

Now they've done it: They've made the Sonic Screwdriver even cooler, with the three extending prongs (Good for ice tongs, too?).
I can't find anything on the Net about it, but I'm sure they're scrambling to put a new replica on the market.

I thnks its cool. Took a while to warm to it, but i like it.

Its still huge though, compared RTDs sonic.

I just don't like the fact that its light is green. I think the sonic screwdriver should have a blue light.

(But, to be fair, at least part of that is related to the fact that I'm synesthetic and associate the word "Doctor" with the color blue.)

I'm not sure I like how he was just using it as a Torch in "The Beast Below".

The Eccleston/Tennant screwdriver was cooler and less self-consciously gimmicky. Like the decorations on the new TARDIS console and Smith's costume, it's too precious by half.

I like some aspects of the new design, but somehow it is over-designed and looks like something intended to be a 'magic wand' rather than the last one which seemed like it could have actually been a simple tool that the doctor 'souped up' over time. The fact that the TARDIS seems to have built the new one, and has it there waiting for him solidifies it as more an extension of the TARDIS than just a handy gadget.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing for them to make this change, but I could do with a little less of it now and again when it seems to be able to do anything and everything. I'd have rather seen 11 build a new one himself as part of the plot of an episode, rather than just have this shiny new lightsaber-looking thing waiting for him in the new console.

Well went to my local comic book store and bought two of them at lunch time ($29.95 AUD).

I LOVE IT.

It's much bigger than the Ecclestone/Tennant version (of which I also have two... I'll post some comparative pix later tonight).

It's a fair bit heavier. You really feel like you're holding something.

It has a cool spring loaded action... which actually is a tad scary, and I'm not sure it's so good for young children as it could potentially have an eye out!

Sound is also louder, there are two different "tones".

It's a bit fiddly to change the batteries, and really they could have used AAA batteries to make it easier to change em (it has three hearing aid batteries like the original).

Packaging is also a cool plastic cylinder, and you can easily keep it in the packaging if you want to.

Yes the Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver is available in some stores now...good luck on finding them not sold out yet. Big Bad Toy Store has them for pre-order and I think so does Entertainment Earth. A friend of mine got it for her son and said it was huge and heavier than Nine and Ten's which I much prefer. I actually really dig River's future sonic screwdriver. Who knows maybe this will be destroyed in this series finale and we'll get River's design next series.

^And bear in mind that the toy Eccleston/Tennant sonics are a bit oversized, while the new one is (supposedly) spot-on. So the size difference is even more pronounced. (And I know somebody is probably going to bring up the old chestnut about the prop in season 2 onward being made from the same molds as the toy, which is only sort of true. The Tennant prop was made from the toy prototype molds, which were the correct size; it was after the prototype was built that the toy was scaled up to accommodate the electronics.)

^The only real difference between the first two is the colour of the main body. I'm actually thinking of respraying the first one.

The Doctor said River had his screw driver.

It's busted.

Or is that the reason it looks so bloody different because it had to be rebuilt?

Toys are cool.

Its still huge though, compared RTDs sonic.
 so what your saying is Moffatt has a bigger sonic than RTDs? :guffaw:

Basically... Yeah. :)

I like the toy version, but i prefere the prop. I know, i know, theyre basically the same, but it just looks better.

The size is a bit much though, but hey, its a cool new gadget. Compared to Ten/Nines sonic, it does much more, but havnt we seen Nine/Ten looking at the clear center column at a reading of some sort? Sure they have at some point.

I also love the way the Tardis makes it for him. Its a nice little connection to the Tardis that i like, the fact that it built a new version for a new doctor was a cool idea, its a personal link between the two.
