Well, in "The Breach" (ENT), Phlox said they were "prodigious" breeders, not specifically fast.

Also, much may hinge on Edward's emphasis of "this particular species" in his comments here. Perhaps meaty-but-slow-to-multiply-and-easily-harmed Tribleustes ventricosus is a dying breed on Iota Geminorum IV, being rapidly or gradually crowded out by Polygeminus grex and any number of other varieties—cf. ants, frogs, et al.—and falling victim to the very same abundance of predators that the latter evolved their quicker and/or more robust reproductive capabilities as a survival mechanism against in the first place?

Could be.

Remember, Larkin both has a specific agenda...and is an idiot. (Who knows if the cause to which he shruggingly ascribes the effect observed—what else but the contribution of his own DNA—is even the true one)

Meta-wise, I don't think we're supposed to believe he's wrong.

Further, recall what happened to Cyrano Jones when he tried to have his small-but-fast-breeding tribbles genetically tinkered with in an effort to stop them from reproducing in "More Tribbles, More Troubles" (TAS)...he (temporarily) wound up with super-extra-meaty ones!

Weird alien shit be weird.

Sort of; the "giant" tribbles were just regular, sterile tribbles clustering together (how so many ended up on the ship when Jones only beamed up with a few is another question).

Random aside: those shoulders always screamed cheesy futurism to me. They kind of look like they came right out of Futurama, and TUC was eight years prior to Futurama.

Especially in combination with that porn-'stache!
To be frank, I think that looks kinda' awesome:guffaw:

This was absolute trash, and I outright refuse to consider this "canon" to the Tribbles background. I'd rather they had spent 15 minutes on, I don't know, watching the unfortunate actors who have to dress as DSC "klingons" trying to sing through their shitty vampire teeth, or something equally as stupid but still less obnoxious then this. I don't blame Benjamin, he's a pretty funny voice actor and I'm sure he could do ok with good material, but this was just a 15 minute Orville episode that used DSC ssets for some reason.

Why am I not surprised.

You do remember that it's just a TV show, right?
Such vitriol toward a single piece of entertainment seems rather misplaced when there are so many other really important worldly things to be outraged and indignant about.

Moderators tend to frown when we bring political stuff in here, otherwise I'd be all [POLITICAL STATEMENT REDACTED]

My post had nothing to do with adding Political Stuff to the conversation.
It was merely an observation about someone being so worked up over a 15 minute piece of entertainment, when there are oh so many more important things in today's world to feel impelled go off on a wild rant about.
I believe that it goes without saying, that it doesn't have to be directed toward a Trek BBS thread.

"So are you saying that we should pay more attention to the movies?"
"NO!!!! That's not what I'm saying at all!!!!!"

Very timely. Considering that here in the United States, today is "Vote For Your Favorite Slickster" Day. ;)

Lighten up, Francis. I was just making a joke.

Finally got around to seeing this Short Trek, only because I was pleasantly surprised by Q&A and Ask Not.

Must admit I didn't think much of it due to everybody acting like they are bloody idiots.

Did enjoy the fact that he created the Tribbles that will go on to cause such trouble for the Klingons and all the shots we got of the ship which gave a good sense of scale and detail.

I would like to think that idiots wouldn't be allowed on Starships, if they are then that means the individuals who let them onboard are idiots too which doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

Perhaps the qualifications to serve as a Science Starship Crewmen aren't quite a rigid as for a Ship-of-the-Line??

What do they do with all the folks who don't graduate from the Academy with honors?

Perhaps ALL Scientists and Doctors aren't required to go through all four years at the Academy?
(if at all)

I dont doubt the characters qualifications were up to it but I would have thought that extensive psychological testing would be a part of it as well.
