Finally ponied up for CBS-AA in preparation for Picard, and watched Q&A. A fun little vignette that shows us a pre-Cage era, wet around the pointy ears Spock. He asks that Number One keep his emotionalism under wraps. Then I was a bit confused -- her deep dark secret is that she loves musical theatre? Is Broadway not an appropriate path to one's own command?

Along with eugenics, musical theatre was one of the main causes of World War III and both are banned in the Federation.

No, her deep dark secret is that every once in awhile, when she is alone or with someone she completely trusts, she actually lets her hair down and enjoys life.
Being a hard-ass Star Fleet Officer is her chosen way to command, but it's just facade that she wears on a daily basis.
:techman:

I think it is a bit unclear. I agree with your interp but she went overboard.

Iirc it is Gilbert and Sullivan, not Broadway, really operetta, so musicals might still be around . . . wait! Don't they do some G and S in TNg or a movie? Grrr. I hate-hate that. But I need my Sondheim and Klingon opera for the utopia.

Perhaps it is that you've never run into these type of folks?

I have several friends and a couple of family members who are exactly like that.
They spend their daily lives bottling up their inner desires just to be conformist with perceived norms, only to explode like a massive firework every once in awhile for a short period.
Then return to their regular routine.

It can be weird as fuk at times cause ya never know when they are going to let loose.

Now imagine someone like that who's in the military and has an even more set daily routine.
When they finally let go it's usually along the lines of Mount Vesuvius or Krakatoa.

I never really understood why some folks don’t like it, it was the most “Next Generationiest” thing in any of the TNG movies.
It's just rather out of place. As a solo scene it is completely fine. In the whole context it is very strange and off putting.
