I'm almost inclined to think we really won't hear any real details about the new series until after Star Trek: Beyond has had its run in theaters.
Agreed. That'll want to focus attention on Beyond first then ride its coattails with the new series promos. Especially if the two are quite different, they won't want casual audiences confusing them.
With Moonves talking about a contractual delay required after Beyond before the TV show can air, it's likely there is a delay on promotional material too.
Just because he didn't outright say "it's set in the Prime universe" doesn't mean it's not new information.
Altman got this information from Fuller. When Fuller was given the job for the new series, he asked Altman to leave his thoughts out of the book. There's obviously something here.

Yeah the ''more conflict between characters'' sounds interesting and will hopefully lead to some interesting stories of characters disagreeing over matters of principle.
Personally, I feel it's been indirectly confirmed when Moonves talk about the contractual requirements between Paramount and CBS. Its pretty clear that the two companies want Paramount Trek and CBS Trek to be two separate and distinct entities that do not crossover or interfere with each other, hence the 6 month embargo from Beyond's release date. It's quite possibly why JJTrek had to be set in a new universe. And if that's true, it implies CBS has retained all the rights to the Prime Universe. Thus, the new series would also be set in the Prime Universe.
JJs Trek was set in a new universe because they wanted to reboot the show and do Kirk and Spock in their youth again, but knew that many of the fans wouldn't accept anything set in that era that was different from the 60s show without an 'explanation' for the difference, hence the new timeline. There's nothing there to suggest the new show will or won't be in that same timeline. It's only sensible marketing to wait until Beyond is out before aggressively marketing the new show, to avoid confusion. I think we make far too much of the CBS/Paramount distinction.
CBS has the IP rights to all of Trek, including the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, so they could really set the series in any continuity they wish.
I think that's really the case here. It's probably more of an issue of CBS and Paramount entering an agreement to protect the Star Trek brand, possibly to prevent a repeat of the oversaturation of the late 1990s/early 2000s. Purely speculation on my part here, but I think if it was up to Paramount, this new series wouldn't be happening or would be happening under their control, not under CBS.cultcross said:

Let's face it, even in the most intense scenes in previous shows, the evil characters hardly surpass the likeness of comic book villains. Even if it had been confirmed that CBS can't use JJTrek(which it hasn't), that doesn't mean the new series has to be Prime. CBS absolutely has the right to create a new reboot if it wants to.
