New series: Enterprise-B or -C?

We're having a discussion about the 1701-A and I tossed out a thought about timeframes. What exactly is the problem?
I'm not sure. I'm not actually certain what you tried to say. Obviously the ship existed before being handed to Kirk, unless Q snapped his fingers and made it appear fully formed the moment Kirk got the keys. Furthermore, I don't understand what building time of the ship has to do with anything; they don't need to know the name or the captain in order to start building a ship.

:sigh:

It was a response to the idea that Starfleet pulled it out of mothballs to give to Kirk.

Now I think that it is more make sense if the Enterprise A is an old Constitution that just get an overhaul, or refit. Maybe They take it out from the mothball / reserve, I don't know; refit it, and then give it to Kirk. Because it doesn't make sense when you have set your shipyard to produce the Excelsior then turn them back to build a new Constitution again, just for Kirk.

That's why the Engineers get a lot of technical problem in Star Trek V. Because it was not a brand new ship. But a decommissioned ship that take out from warehouse, refitted it with new technology, and then recommisioned her again with a new name.

And because of the age of the hull (metal fatigue almost reach the limit), it make sense when the Enterprise A has a short live.
No no no, older ships don't go through shakedowns; the older they are the better they run. New ships go through shakedowns not old ships.

From Star Trek: The Motion Picture

KIRK: Mister Scott! Shall we give the Enterprise a proper shakedown?

I imagine any ship that goes through a major upgrade would go through a shakedown cruise to make sure everything works.

Here's the thing: Morrow states to Kirk that "The Enterprise is 20 years old," and "We feel her day is over."

Putting aside for the moment the fact that the Enterprise should actually be at least 30 years old at the time if not older, let's take Morrow's comments at face value. He mentions nothing about the damage the ship has taken, only that the ship is old. This, in spite of the fact that the ship was refit into "an almost entirely new Enterprise" (Decker's words) 15 years before. And while Morrow was specifically referring to the Enterprise, one wonders if this sentiment was shared for all Constitution class ships.

So, if Starfleet's attitude is that 20 year old ships are obsolete, even after being refitted, and that the Excelsior is now the new kid on the block, then it's highly unlikely that they would continue production of a class of ship whose "day is over." Since we see an abundance of Miranda class ships in TNG but zero Constitutions, it stands to reason that the Miranda was the Constitution's successor as far as that design lineage goes. So I'm assuming that the Ent-A was an older Connie that was going to be decommissioned anyway, and was just given to Kirk as a reward.

Plus, visual evidence: At the end of TVH, we see the interior of the Ent-A's bridge. It's a version of the standard bridge we've seen since TMP. In TFF, it's a new bridge. So at some point between the two films, the Enterprise-A got a refit. That wouldn't be necessary if it were a brand-new ship.

Well, I read in the Wikipedia (I don't know if what they write is right or wrong), that shakedown, or sea trial is not necessarily conducted only by new ship. Even the commissioned ship can conducted a sea trial too. Usually to confirm the impact of the modification.

Plus, in a new vessel, the sea trial usually happen before the ship was commissioned. And usually in attendance are the technical representative of the builder. But the Enterprise A has been commissioned.

So in case of the Enterprise A; there are two possibility that I think about of it.
First, They have built the hull long time ago. But hasn't commissioned the ship yet because of various reason. Then when they think it is necessary, they put the weapons, electronics, etc and commissioned her. It happen in real life too. For example the Chinese Navy. they built their Type 052C hull long time ago. But it is only recently that they put the electronics, weapons etc, and commissioned her.

Second, The Enterprise A is actually an old vessel that has been decommissioned by the Starfleet. Then when they think it is necessary to reward Kirk and his crews a ship, then they took the ship out from the mothball, refit her, and then renamed her with "USS Enterprise-A".

Because of the modification, it is logical that Kirk conducted "sea-trial" / shakedown on the "Enterprise-A".

Is it? In my eyes, it is a very beautiful ship :)

What ship class is it? I thought that it is an Excelsior Class, but I think, it isn't. And the sourer look like the Galaxy Class. So I guess that she has already has the Phased Array Phaser?

The Enterprise-C is Ambassador class.

Like the design, but I think it is a little too close to what we saw on screen with the Galaxy class.
Yep. Beautiful ship nevertheless. I think it is based on Andrew Probert's original concept art for Enterprise-C.

I usually trust people to be smart enough to not need that disclaimer every time, but if you really need me to, I'll try and keep you in mind in future.
