New Quantum of Solace trailer!

I can understand not wanting to move back into the silliness that was prevalent in the Roger Moore era, but I think the series is starting to lose its identity a bit. There are certain staples of the Bond series that give it its charm. Bond will walk in, flirt with Moneypenny, get chewed out by M (granted, that's still there) and then hop on down to Q branch for some gadgets and chastising about proper handling of said gadgets.

Those are part of the Bond mythos, and I think it's a big mistake to remove these elements from the series. Without them, there's little to diffrentiate the Bond series from other spy movies. Don't get me wrong, I loved Casino Royale. I just hope that the series doesn't forget where it came from.

Pretty much what JacksonArcher said, we've had twenty years of that stuff and I think we've earned a bit of a break. Over the years people started to believe it was merely the fact that Bond said certain things and did certain things that made him Bond, rather than how he did them and said them. They pretty much became vestigial and had no meaning.

I was not a big fan of Casino Royale on release but it has grown on me a lot since its release, and in a way i'm looking forward to more of the same, although that trailer makes it look more like a Jason Borne movie than a James Bond movie, well to me anyway.

The Bond books started with the Moneypenny/M scene. It fits - see Bond get his assignment.

With that in mind, QoS starts an hour after CR. Might not be time for that.

Quite looking forward to this film.

Looks really, really good.

My only fear is that if they're not careful they'll steer Bond back into parody. Mad gadgets, ludicrously over the top action and no consequences for anything. Of course I worried about this as well with TDK but those fears turned out to be totally unjustified.

That is NOT part of the Bond mythos in the books. It is part of the Hollywood Bond mythos. If you've read any of the books, you'll see that Bond is exactly how he was written in Casino Royale. Dark, gritty, and rough around the edges.

^No, but when you go to a Bond movie, there are certain things you expect to see. Moneypenny and Q are an essential part of the Bond mythos. I can't speak for everyone, but I know I'm feeling their absence.

To put it another way, what if the Batman series decided to do away with Alfred or Gordon? There would be outcry.

I agree.
There are just somethings that should be there in some capacity.

Good example with Batman, Alfred and Gordon

John Picard said it best. Moneypenny, Q, all of that stuff is from the James Bond films. This new series is drawing more from the books than the films. Just like the new Batman series is drawing more from the comic-books than not.

James Bond didn't come out of the womb with the Q Olive Branch and Moneypenny. That's not what makes him Bond.

This seems to strike a balance between strong character/plot driven substance and action packed sci-fi (without ending up naff, like Die Another Day). QoS seems to be a spectacular amalgamation of the best elements of License to Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, and GoldenEye.

Thanks for pointing this out and the handy link. The movie looks awesome and I can hardly wait.

I have to keep showing Casino Royale in the meantime.:)
