New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big three.

Wirhout having seen the new movie it seems a forgone conclusion that Uhura will have a bigger role than Dr. McCoy.
I actually have no problem with that as Dr. McCoy in either incarnation was never a character that I liked.

It is interesting though how far we've come from the 1960's and how smart the marketing people are to elevate the sexy Uhura character.

Still...anyone remember when Trek posters actually had THE ENTERPRISE on them?

One, (of many) complaints an aunt of mine always (loudly) harped upon whenever the subject of Star Trek came up was how the Doctor hardly ever seemed to be "where he belonged", in sickbay. Perhaps Nutrek producers agree with her sentiments.

I'm fine with it, I'm sure Bones will still get enough screen-time.

Re: New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big thr

On the one hand, the publicity for the first movie did the same thing, and Uhura was arguably a more important character than McCoy there, so this is nothing new. It makes sense; not only would it be natural for a modern production to play up its female lead more rather than sidelining her, but Zoe Saldana is one of the biggest stars in the cast and they'd be fools to relegate her to opening hailing frequencies.

On the other hand, remember all those publicity photos for the second TOS pilot that featured Shatner, Nimoy, and Andrea Dromm, giving the impression that Dromm was one of the lead cast members? In the actual pilot, her entire speaking part consisted of four syllables. So you can't trust promotional materials to be accurate.

Or.... Zoe Zaldana sells more tickets than Urban does. ;)

"Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a movie poster boy."

Same here, and my thoughts exactly.

Re: New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big thr

Since they are trying to appeal to a greater fan base, it makes sense to have a woman in the main group. That attracts the female audience to the movie.

Plus from a real life perspective, Zoe is a bigger star than Urban.
And if you think about it, if you saw the same poster with the Doc then you have 4 men all featured. Doesn't look right if you want to attract different people. So a woman makes it work. Plus like I said, its Zoe, so more people are gonna be like "hey its that chick from Avatar...must be a good movie then"

Well, Ilia bumped McCoy off of the TMP movie poster. Saavik appeared with Kirk and Spock instead of McCoy on TWOK posters. McCoy is on TSFS poster, but Saavik is more prominent. All seven appear on TVH, together. It's just Kirk and Spock on TFF. The "Big Three," and only The Big Three, finally appear together on TUC poster.

Nonsense, this is the marketing dept appealing to women and diversity.

Well, no, it's not nonsense. Yes, featuring the female lead in the publicity doesn't prove anything about the contents of the film itself, as a general rule; but independently of that, the previous film already established Uhura as a more prominent character than McCoy in the new continuity, and given that Saldana is a bigger star than Urban, there is absolutely no reason to expect that to change this time around.

Diversity? Isn't diversity an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era?

Re: New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big thr

This would make me slightly sad, as Mccoy is my favourite TOS character and I liked Urban's take on him. And I thought he kinda got sidelined in the second half of the 2009 film.

But, yeah, there's plenty to be said for for having one of your top three characters be something other than white and male.

Ehhh no on many counts. Urban is a bigger star, who has been in bigger movies, and McCoy still plays a bigger part. He's the current best friend of the main focus of JJ's movie...Kirk, and his story of growth to the 5 year mission. Uhura is secondary or even tertiary to this.

If you don't keep showing diversity (which is reality) then you get hardening of the arteries and fall back into old habits. It never gets old.

When people see what they are on screen they identify with it.

Exactly. It's not like the previous generation of movie posters made a big deal of McCoy or "the Big Three."

This is nothing new.

This isn't news.

This is a founding principle of the Abramsverse.

Re: New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big thr

I like that Uhura is actually doing things now. Also I don't really remember McCoy being on any poster as if he were the focus of the movie.

That's because he wasn't.

Don't get me wrong. McCoy is one of my favorite STAR TREK characters, but the fact that the female lead rates the poster and he doesn't is hardly some pernicious new development.

As far back as TMP, the poster emphasized Kirk and Spock . . . and Lieutenant Ilia.

Re: New poster seems proof UHURA has replaced DR. MCCOY in the big thr

You need a women on posters. Lots of people like women :D

Always been the case. I'm staring at the poster for the old 30's movie version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES right now. Guess what? Wendy Barrie who played the female lead is on the poster--but Watson isn't!

The more things change . . . .
