New Possible Fan Fiction Series

StarFleetVeteran

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
After years of thinking about it, I've finally decided to try to start a fanfic series. I've been role-playing Trek for over 10 years, and now that my life and schedule in general has started to become more hectic, I don't really have time for weekly RPGs anymore. So, I decided that the best way to get all of the ideas I get out of my head is to try to start using them in stories. I've spent a couple months going over various ideas in my head, and I finally settled on a series based on the adventures of the Challenger NX-03 after its launch, and it's involvement in the Earth-Romulan War.

I don't have too much written of the first story yet, but I thought I'd post an excerpt of what I do have to get some general feedback, seeing as how this is my first time really writing anything like this.

If anyone (particularly anyone with some writing experience under their belts) has any tips or pointers for me, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

Orbital Drydock Facility 314, Station 15 B

"Does that hurt, Captain?"

Captain Alex Hart squeezed his eyes shut, partly to block out the blinding light shining directly into his face, and partly to block out the thoughts of what was going on inside his mouth at the moment.

Get a hold of yourself! he scolded himself. You're a grown man and a Starfleet captain. You can handle a little dental work.

"Captain?" repeated the Challenger's chief medical officer, Doctor Kofi Kingsley, as he uncerimoniously poked and prodded at the gum around one of Hart's upper back molars. "Does that hurt?"

Pulled from his thoughts, the captain focused his attention on the area that the doctor was indicating. He took little comfort in the fact that his gum indeed seemed to be appropriately numbed, but nodded as much as he could manage.

"Excellent," Kingsley said in a rich Ghanan accent, then looked up at his assistant over the magnifying glasses he wore. "The gum area has been suitably anesthetized. I believe we'll start with the maxillary second molar, then proceed to the first molar."

"Yes, doctor," replied head nurse Sam Harding as she turned to the doctor's tray of nightmares and set to work preparing.

The doctor returned his attention to the captain's mouth, and Hart sighed as he attempted to plan out his schedule for the day in his head.

"I hear Starfleet Command is attempting to push up our launch date," Kingsley said suddenly, and Hart realized that the doctor was speaking to him.

"Uh-huh," he answered simply.

"Forgive me sir," the African man said. "I don't mean to overstep my bounds. Just making conversation."

Hart sighed again, silently wondering why Kingsley (and dentists as a whole) felt the need to make small talk while they had their hands inside someone's mouth.

Before he could reply further, a voice came over the intercom.

"Bridge to Captain Hart."

Hart allowed his hopes to rise that he might be spared what was about to come. He shot a quick look towards the com panel on the wall, then back at the doctor, who took the hint. Letting an irritated sigh escape his lips, Kingsley rolled in his chair across the deck to the panel and pressed a switch, then nodded.

"Hart here," said the captain, finding his speech not as impedimented by the numbness as he thought it'd be.

"I have Admiral Stone at Starfleet Command for you," came the responce of the on duty communications officer, a Czech woman named Kara Novac.

"Thank you Ensign," Hart replied, sitting up. Craning his neck around, he looked over at the doctor, who simply nodded. "Patch it through down here."

The captain got to his feet and crossed the room to the doctor's desk. Pulling off the bib he was wearing to protect his uniform, he sat down and tapped on the monitor, activating it. The emblem of Starfleet Command appeared on the screen, then after several moments abruptly switched to show the broad shouldered, dark-skinned man wearing admiral's bars.

"Captain Hart," Admiral Eli Stone began without preamble, which was out of the ordinary for the usually jovial man. However, despite the urgency on the admiral's face and in his baritone voice, there was a twinkle in his eyes. "How soon can you be ready to launch?"

This is exactly why I started writing fanfic!

You're off to a promising start, please continue. :bolian:

Looks like this has potential. :) You really have the feel of the Enterprise era--a cutting-edge ship (for humanity), yet the "barbarism" of dentistry as we know it. I'd love to see more. :)

Thanks for the support guys! I've got a little bit more, but I think I need to work on my details, and fitting them into the story. I'm also going to upload future updates and whatnot to my server (cause I'm not used to some of the editing codes used on forums) as text files, so I'll post that link when I've got some more. Thanks again, and any more input and critiques are welcome!

See the site in my signature line. I'd love to have your story written up in Microsoft Word/Works. Congratulations on getting things started. Tell me more about your idea. Timeline, etc.

This is quite possibly one of the most traumatizing beginnings for a Trek fan fiction story. The captain at the dentist? That's not a good omen.

A nice, offbeat beginning and I'd be interested in reading more of this. It's not everyday somebody decides to write an original series set in this era.

I'm game. Good start, interesting starting point(ok, it gives me nightmares-I had 2 major dental surgeries this year), and an era I find fascinating.

Yeah. No kidding. I expect a Captain to be enjoying the gradually waning afterglow of good sex or at least something equally good in the holodeck/holosuite.

Well, here's where I'm at right now...

As one of the few Trek readers I know that actually considers the novels canon, I try to maintain the timelines and such that the novels go by. I just started reading The Good That Men Do, and after that I'm going to read Kobayashi Maru to make sure I'm up to date with what's been going on in the Enterprise-era (I loved the Columbia's story in Destiny #1). Soo, I'm going to try to follow the timeline from those books, starting out set in late 2155/early 2156, between the events of KM and D#1, and eventually dealing with what happens with Columbia.

I'm still trying to work out a few more plot ideas for this first story, but I'm hoping I'll have the first chapter done by this weekend. Maybe. Lol.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement so far! It's making me even more excited then I was before Lol.

Nothing wrong with using the books as canon material. But I'd be careful not to assume that everyone will be familiar with them. You will make it easier on your readers if you write your stories in a way that somebody who hasn't read the books can follow them.

"Yeah, feedback has a tendency to do that," he agreed, after glancing at the two lonely comments posted on the latest installment of his own story.

Yeah, and that tended to be both a problem and an advantage when it came to role-playing, so I'm trying to keep that in mind as I write.
