New or Old Klingons?

With rare exception I found the TNG era Klingons to be largely one-note. Thee JJ style Klingons are not an improvement.

When I reimagined the Klingons I look the best of the look they had in TSFS and mixed with the best of what TOS had to offer. You can get an idea from my member avatar. I definitely did away with the whole savage space viking thing. Click the Klingon propaganda link in my sig to see the entire animation.

I've been wondering if that video was real for a while now. I saw it a long time ago late at night and wasn't sure if I hadn't dreamed the whole thing. It's really fantastic.

The TOS Klingons had nothing going for them aside from good actors (Jon Colicos and Ansara) in bland roles and that we didn't see them very much.

Indeed. I was rather confused by the remarks that the JJ Klingons were scary again... Khan wiped out the entire recon group ON HIS OWN! On their own turf! That's not particularly formidable, intimidating, or scary.

Kang and Kor were both capable of being sinister and intimidating, but they also had a higher measure of introversion, thoughtfulness, and consideration to their actions. Kor and Kang are also very distinct from one another.

I think the best TOS Klingon was Kor. Colicos wasn't a big guy, but he could play cold and ruthless, intimidating. Ansara was a warrior, more like the later Klingons. Koloth was a joke, but that was how he was written.

For later Klingons, to me there is none better than Martok. Hertzler's portrayal was like an onion. Layers, lots of layers.

Am I the only one who thinks that the JJ Klingons look like red lectroids from planet 10 in buckaroo banzai?

Nothing beats video links. :)

Actually, Moore got the idea for an honor-bound society from reading a TOS novel about the Klingons, "The Final Reflection," which is probably the best ST novel ever written.
Reminds me, for another novel carry-over, I'd like to have met a memorable agent or two (or even an Operations Master) of Imperial Intelligence in TNG / DS9. The Cardassians had the Obsidian Order, Romulans the Tal Shiar, and Section 31 for the Feds. Where's the Klingon equivalent?

They mention the Imperial Intelligence Agency a few times. We just don't see members of it.

Dumb question but was it ever explained how their metamorphosis from TOS took place?

When Worf was asked in "Trials and Tribble-ations", doesn't he say something it is not something we talk about. I thought that was a lame too easy out for the writers.

My assumption was some kind of genetic engineering to make their appearance more savage and fierce and instill fear in their enemies (which is pretty much every other race and sometime themselves).

Yeah, and that TOS Klingons are the mutations.

I still prefer the fanon explanation: there are simply different races of Klingons just as there are different races of himsns.

Call me whatever, but when I see a Klingon I know it's a Klingon. Doesn't matter to me if he has ridges or not, and I don't really need an explanation.

They could have easily explained the difference by saying that the Smooths and Chunkies were from different parts of the planet, and one race conquered the other. Either way, it makes me no difference. Klingons are Klingons, and they're fun.
