New NF book in May '08?

Calhoun's look has been different a few times on various covers but I'm looking forward to this one. I too am in need of a NF fix, but seeing Calhoun in Before Dishonor was nice.

A blurb for the first issue, which will be in march apparently (source):

In its first year of Star Trek comics, IDW Publishing broke out of the box with marquee titles like Star Trek: Year Four, the blockbuster Klingons: Blood Will Tell and the fan-favorite Alien Spotlight one-shots. Now, IDW takes it to the next level with the launch of its Star Trek: Second Stage lineup, featuring some of the top Star Trek creators in comics, books and television. It all begins here! New York Times Best-Selling author and comics legend Peter David, the hand-picked creator of the first Star Trek crew designed exclusively for print, celebrates the tenth anniversary of his creation by writing New Frontier's first-ever comic book series, showcasing all-new stories and the official continuation of the hit books.

In issue one, "Slingshot," the most dangerous experimental vessel in the galaxy -- a prototype time ship -- has vanished, and it appears that the man who stole it is none other than Starfleet Admiral Edward Jellico. Only Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur have a hope in finding him before the ship, intended purely for scientific exploration, is used to disrupt the space-time continuum. With art by Stephen Thompson (Beneath the Valley of Rage), who also delivers four painted covers available as a Quad Cover, all bound in the same issue. Thompson also provides a bonus incentive cover featuring "Starfleet Captain Peter David" in the command chair!

Does that mean I have to read the comics to find out what happens to the crew? Because I'm not and never have been a fan of comics.

***SPOILERS***

And yes, I'm aware that PAD will probably explain all in his books, but that doesn't mean I'll understand it. I never understood the Excal blowing up--only later finding it was caused all the way back in the Double Helix series.

Amazon is the last place I would trust on this count. I'll wait until Peter David says something on his site before I get excited.

I agree; Amazon has certainly been wrong before. Besides, Peter David hasn't even mentioned the New Frontier comic book on his website yet, let alone any new prose fiction (then again, he did get a bit snippy when people didn't like Before Dishonor, so maybe he's backed off from mentioning his Trek work for a bit :) ).

He posted a blog entry this morning confirming the five issue comics series, a New Frontier story in the next Mirror Universe book, and that he doesn't have a publication date for the next NF novel, but he'll let us know when he does.

A better quality copy of the cover has been released, Calhoun's scar is a little clearer: link

Because this thread is about New Frontier, that one is about everything IDW announced for next year, which happens to include New Frontier too, but as New Frontier is rather popular is what got focused on the most, but that thread is also about D.C. Fontana’s miniseries, the John Byrne series and the Mirror Universe comics.

Calhoun, IMO, has always looked like a cross between John Sheppard (SGA) and Dylan McDermott. The Captain's Table cover got it right, as far as I'm concerned.

This guy kinda looks like a robot.

He's a long-lost Baldwin brother. ;)

Actually, all renditions so far have supposedly been based on a series of portrait photographs cover artist Keith Birdsong took of a photogenic neighbour!

PAD has said he's most satisfied by the depictions of the crew in the WildStorm NF comic, since he had approval/input into the development of the pencilling and inking. PAD has never had approval over the novel covers.

That explains why he did always look at least fairly similar on all the other covers.

*After looking through the NF covers* Although, now that I look, his appearance actually does differ quite a bit from book to book.

Dang, I was really hoping NF meant non-fiction. Guess I should have known better. Don't imagine there will be anything like that until THE REMAKING OF ST 2008 gets commissioned.
