New name ..

Actually no I didn't. I didn't have a female avatar at the same time as I had the other name. I gave that up before I switched names. I had Invader Zim and Village of the Damned avatars at the time, which are not particularly conducive to being hit on. Not that I got hit on when I had the female avatars either. Mostly I got hit on by gay men in the photo threads. And that's still basically what happens!

^ Be careful now Goji. It is not our fault we have good taste. :rommie:

So when I signed up, I put about 10 seconds of thought into my name, and in fact, I had to try about 3 different potential names before I found one that wasn't taken. So needless to say, I was never really happy with it and was really glad when we got the option to change (which, for you newer folks, we didn't always have). If I wasn't the first in the name-change line when the option became available, I was damn close.

The difference is that I'm quite happy with the name I have now, and have no interest in ever changing again.

I did almost exactly the same thing when I signed-up five years ago (my third time since 2001). I was in a hurry and really didn't put much thought into "AntiDrone". After about a week I realized it was hard to say and to obscure a nod to my own personal individuality. Folks just didn't get it and after about a year I started to hate it. So presto-chango, I asked to switch to something that I really loved and thought was more fun. It also fit me better. I have no intention of ever changing it again either.

I never understood the want to change your user name. I mean, mine feels like a part of me. It'd be weird to be called anything else. It's kind of like changing your name in real life.

You spend so much time cultivating a reputation and persona under your user name. Why then go off and change it? It seems to me that the confusion it can cause would be more trouble than it was worth.

I agree with this sentiment. I love my username and will never change it. If someone said it aloud in public I'd probably respond to it as if it were my real name.

I'll probably change my name again in a year's time -- probably out of boredom, and also because it seems to irritate people.

In fact, I do. It's that much a part of my mental processes. Of course, I've had the same handle for over a decade, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

I feel no connection to my username. But I've had this problem since I first started going online. I have never been able to find a name that I was satisfied with. Some people have perfect usernames that are cute or funny or sum up their personality quite nicely, but try as I might I can't find one like that for myself. As a result I have different usernames on almost every site I visit, none of which I particularly like.

I've done that, at scifi cons in Dallas, where folks holler out "od0" 'cause they know what I look like, but not my real name, 'til I tell 'em.

Me too. In fact, people who know me both online and IRL routinely just call me Ice or Iceman

I actually wouldn't mind changing my Xbox Live gamertag to "Servo", I just refuse to pay Microsoft 800 points for the privilege. Plus, I'd be surprised if it's not already taken, so I'd have to come up with a variation of it.
