New name ..

Cool My new Name came through
I tried to log on with the old one and couldn't figure out why I couldn't log on?? (Too early in the Morning).

I use the "remember me on this computer" setting, and it did even though I changed my login name as well. I expect the cookie must contain an account number rather than the name.

Same thing happened with me. Now that I think about it, I've never had to sign in with my current username, so I have wondered until now whether I'd have to use my new username or my old one to sign in.

^ You'd use your new name, just like with temporary seasonal name changes throughout october/december.

I use the "remember me on this computer" setting, and it did even though I changed my login name as well. I expect the cookie must contain an account number rather than the name.

I expect the cookie just contains a session hash, and the server knows which UserId that session hash is associated with.

When you enter the site, your hash cookie is sent to the server, which compares that against it's own private list and identifies which user you are (UserId). It then issues you with a new cookie with a new hash, overwriting references to the old one. Each hash cookie will last 12 months.

So the only time* you'd need to enter your login details is if you don't visit the site for 12 months, as the cookie would have expired and the server would no longer recognise it.

(*) Assuming the server doesn't go wrong and you don't delete your cookie :)

Can I be blunt (he says as he's about to be blunt anyway)? Change it back, ASAP. Even better, go back in time and prevent your past self from making this terrible mistake in the first place.

Johnnyracefan
flows well, it describes your interests, has years of history and name recognition behind it here, and is easy to remember for new people. This is just... it's something. I'll leave it at that.

Plus, and I'm being obsessive here, but the lack of a space after the period in "T.Azell" makes my eye twitch something fierce.

I will never understand why long term members in good standing change their names.

I'm forced to agree with everything here. If you're a newer member and decide you'd prefer a new name, fine. But if you've been here for years under the same name, why change it now?

I constantly struggle with the thought of changing my username though I've been here for years. I never really liked the first username I signed up with, as I didn't even expect to post with it so I put no thought at all into the name. So when the opportunity to change your username came around I changed it to this one, but I've never been entirely satisfied with Spot's Meow either. The only thing that's stopped me from changing my username again is that I haven't been able to think of anything else I like!

Maybe people who change their user name should be required to have their previous name in their profile, or an additional to the information field under the avatar, for "Previous Username(s):"

They are required to have it in their location field for a certain period of time, I believe, much like when we change our names for the holidays.

^ For 30 days following the change, yup.

Maybe people who change their user name should be required to have their previous name in their profile, or an additional to the information field under the avatar, for "Previous Username(s):"
Or you could simply check the existing Username Changes List thread in QS&F, where all of that is recorded already.

What an idea, right?

This portion of your post mirrors the position I found myself in. When I signed up here in 2001, I never in a million years dreamed that I would ever post. The board was much more aggressive in tone back then, and in truth, I was afraid to post here at first.

So when I signed up, I put about 10 seconds of thought into my name, and in fact, I had to try about 3 different potential names before I found one that wasn't taken. So needless to say, I was never really happy with it and was really glad when we got the option to change (which, for you newer folks, we didn't always have). If I wasn't the first in the name-change line when the option became available, I was damn close.

The difference is that I'm quite happy with the name I have now, and have no interest in ever changing again.

Seriously. Only someone so fickle and difficult to please would change their username. :shifty:

Right. And then change it back to the original. :shifty:
