New Name For Sci Fi Channel

That's like what my wife calls what I watch. Maybe they should use that:

SkiFee.

Isn't any worse than SyFy.

It's new nickname should be Syphi, like syphilis?
There, now I feel like I joined in.

What happened to Beyond that's better than SyFy at least. If they're going to try and be creative with the name, they could at least try UKTV's brand of creativity. Dave, Daveja Vu, Yesterday, Blighty, Alibi, Eden, etc...

^Actually, I'm not even certain that this name change will affect the UK Sci-Fi Channel as they just share a name and various other bits of branding.

From the Sci-Fi website:

"By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure."

Looks like it won't really be a sci-fi channel any more.

It probably will, but it'll take a while, like how long has it taken them to go widescreen? Only 10 years or so, so maybe they'll go with the rebranding in about 3 or 4 years?

OK, I can see how all those elements (besides reality TV) fit in with Sci-fi programming, but just how broad do you go with it before admitting that they're just any other network, and stop pretending?

They also say...

"Syfy more clearly captures the mainstream appeal of the world's biggest entertainment category, and reflects the network's ongoing strategy to create programming that's more accessible and relatable to new audiences. Syfy will continue to celebrate the traditional roots of the genre, while opening the brand to accommodate a broader range of imagination-based entertainment."

To me it's sounds like double-speak to justify becoming a more generic cable channel. I used to love the Sci-fi channel when it first went on the air. The show "SciFi Buzz" was a hoot. Now I hardly ever watch.

This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have heard. And I've heard a lot of stupid things in my day.

Sad thing is, Sci Fi/SyFy is now encouraging people who can't spell their name.

this whole thing is just awful.....

anyone remember when Sci-fi first started out, and it mainly just played re-runs of TOS, Quantum Leap, Incredible Hulk etc.

what a waste

If Sperry and Burroughs survived the mutation into "Unisys" - which was widely agreed to sound like a venereal disease - SciFI will manage this transition fine.

In Canada, Space: The Imagination Station isn't much better: it got rid of things like Space News, the convention listings, and the little interviews with sci-fi authors that would pop up between each show. I fear that since CTVGlobemedia have taken over, things will get worse. And the Spaceys aren't even being broadcast anymore.

Other than BSG it's been all downhill since they stopped running Dark Shadows. :p

So now do we call it "Siffy"?

Even though science fiction has a broad appeal these days it still doesn't make for big TV ratings. Yes, sci-fi movies can equal big box office, but TV is a different animal (especially in the U.S.) That's why Sci-Fi/SyFy broadcasts wrestling. They need to boost the ratings.

"we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own...Syfy—unlike the generic entertainment category "sci-fi"—firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark that is portable across all nonlinear digital platforms and beyond, from Hulu to iTunes. Syfy also creates an umbrella brand name that can extend into new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, including Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids."

That makes some sense. Maintaining any trademark control over "sci fi" must have been a challenge, particularly in pushing into categories beyond their single cable outlet where competing uses of the term may already be established.

No, Sci-Fi broadcasts wrestling because NBC Universal signed a contract with WWE to take a number of hours of programming per week and a number of Saturday Night's Main Event specials. They were an hour under on the weekly programming and, with USA reluctant to be known as the "wrestling network" (since they carry the other three hours), NBC decided that ECW should air on Sci-Fi instead.

It is nonsensical to blame ECW for whatever problems Sci-Fi has. It has one hour a week.

If you Google SyFy you get this as the number one hit -

http://www.airlockalpha.com/

That website used to be called SyFy Portal but they changed their name because of the long standing rumor that Sci-Fi would change to SyFy.

I don't understand why Mike changed the name of the site, if anything he would have gotten even more traffic from this change. It's not a copy right issue since Mike was using that name for over 10 year before it was even a thought in the scfi channel execs heads. I dunno, from a marketing POV he should have kept the name for sevel reasons, not just this one.

Skiffy shoud have used 'beyond' instead like they talked about.

Really..perhaps we need to start our own Sci-Fi channel...after all the current Bozos running the old one tossed the entire "Science Fiction" thing straight into the crapper..please note the "Reality" genre that they have included in the blurb above...

Reality shows=more even cheaper crap programming...

I've never forgiven them for axing MST3K....

I'll just watch my extensive DVD collection over and over...

Fuck em...
