New Name For Sci Fi Channel

My TiVO will still allow me to record their programs and fast-forward through the commercials.

Having a new logo on the screen won't bother me.

They should call it the "if" channel. They've had commercials where they take the "i" from sci and the "f" from fi to come up with "if." So they should have just gone with the IF Channel. The tag line could be something like "IF ONLY..."

They could call it Imaginative Fiction - IF

Tag line - What IF?

Sci Fi Channel Becoming Less Geek-Centric "Syfy"

* Yehs, I´m offended.

"According to a TV Week article, NBC Universal has decided to change the name of their Sci Fi Channel to Syfy. Why? To pull in a more 'mainstream' audience. If you're unclear what 'more mainstream' means, TV Historian Tim Brooks spells it out for you: 'The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular.' Yes, we should probably all be offended. And telling us that a crack marketing team came up with the name because that's how tech-savvy 18-to-34 year-olds would text it really doesn't help."

Sounds like Universal hired the same people who thought changing Mountain Dew to MTN DEW was a good idea.

Sci Fi have been distancing themselves from the "science fiction" label for years now. I'm surprised they haven't changed the name and direction of the channel to something completely away from the "sci fi" genre.

Well I do think "The CRAP Channel" would be more descriptive and appropriate. with a new logo besides..

Re: Sci Fi Channel Becoming Less Geek-Centric "Syfy"

I hardly watch Sci Fi anymore. Their problrm is that they show crap 90's Sci-Fi that was cancelled for a reason, wrestling (give me a break!), reality TV (ghost hunters), and unexciting disaster films.Their viewing schedule is messed up. They show their programming all over the week at different times and run an early afternoon marathon of mostly poor shows. If they came out with quality reruns (shown in a continuous schedule) and/or quality original Science Fiction, they would be in good shape. Cobra

Re: Sci Fi Channel Becoming Less Geek-Centric "Syfy"

so it went from geeky but quait to metro sexual and faggy.

It doest really matter i guess after BSG is done i wont watch it that much. All though i do like Eureka

Re: Sci Fi Channel Becoming Less Geek-Centric "Syfy"

yay! More wrestling and more reality TV. Estate of Panic and Scare Tactics! Chase! WCG Ultimate Gamer! Ghost hunters! (their highest rated show now)

Sometime next year there will be SG:U and Caprica surrounded by reality tv, wrestling and game shows. I hope those scripted shows can survive surrounded by crap.

i'm surprised that no one has been shot on scare tactics

it's what we've been saying for years: they've given up on trying to be "*THE* Science Fiction channel", because they just weren't capable of it

Who DOESN'T want the generic name? To be "THE Comedy Channel?" or "THE Scifi Channel?"

The name change reflects the truth of the situation, finally: they're more of a reality shows and cheap ghost reality shows and wrestling channel, than they are a "science fiction" channel.

up until now, when major series ended on the channel there was at least overlap; Farscape ended with Stargate on the air, and Stargate SG-01 ended with Atlantis and BSG on the air (and Atlantis with BSG around the corner)

Now, they have NO flagship show after BSG....do you seriously think ANYONE notices Eureka now? 3 seasons in when it doesnt' even have "new show" status?

Stargate: UNiverse is starting up, true, but what if it stinks? And Caprica looked like an unmitigated disaster BEFORE I learned that Jane Espenson was put in charge....now that Jane's on, I think it will be the next Galactica 1980.

As the old saying prophesied, "once BSG ends, it's all over for the ScifiChannel"

"SyFy"? I get better shows from Adult Swim!

remember when Sci-Fi had the S.C.I.F.I. marathons during the week, theme marathons monday through friday, and good anime on saturdays?
