New Name For Sci Fi Channel

Do you think "Imagine Greater" is meant for the new name... like the president of the network knows SyFy sucks so everyone should just...

Imagine Greater

Another bizarre thing, there was a HUGE movie theater chain for decades called "Syufy Enterprises". That's what I thought of when I saw the new moniker.

where do we submit this thread as proof of the network further alienating us. we can only hope the whole thing works as well as the Tropicana logo

At least, in terms of branding, they're sticking on the sci-fi side of things and not going more mainstream, like earlier rumours and fanfits were suggesting. Could easily have been SNN or ManTV. (why isnt;t there a shrug smiley yet!?!)

But I hate it.

Why didn't they go with their original rumored name "Beyond". It doesn't take an idiot to realize that it's all about trademarking. They couldn't trademark "Sci-Fi" because it's too deep in the public domain like other genre categories like "Romance" or "Western" or "English Literature". You can see those titles in every bookstore and videostore. But "Sy Fy" could be trademarked. So, as with everything else, it's about money. I doubt it means we'll be seeing any drastic changes. In fact, it might get worse.

I don't see how "SyFy" will suddenly make Transmorphers 2 and The Day the Earth Stopped appeal to a broader audience.

the thing I don't get is how they keep insisting "well, "scifi" was too generic...now one knew who we were! But "Syfy" is more unique!"

uh....for starters, there's only been ONE "Scifi Channel" up until now....WHO WERE YOU COMPETING WITH?!

I mean, is it because they want more specific internet search hits?

But really, it's the same feeling as when UPN was messing with Enterprise, worse actually:

the people in charge of Scifi Channel hate Scifi.

And no, I also think "Fantasy" is scifi....Moonlight is science fiction (and fantasy), SFF....but "Ghost Hunters", is NOT.

And the thing is, I agree that you shouldn't rely on the niche "gamers living in their parents basements" demographic, but not EVERYONE is that far gone, and you're alienating your core demographic for...what?

Why not focus on making GOOD scifi shows that attract women? ***Battlestar*** is infamously, INFAMOUSLY a scifi show that is good enough that women watch it too.

And is Heroes or Lost or Doctor Who just "for men"? ***Even the Stargates were targeted kind of at both.

I see this name change as the Death Knell of the channel.

Obviously, I mean, yes, "Scifi Channel is dead"...even they are saying that, but it's not "long life SyFy"!

It's ending with a whimper and not a bang.

***at least they finally acknowledged in print what they long have in fact.

It's amazing....the high hopes I had for this channel during Farscape seasons 2-3. I mean Farscape season 3 coupled with Stargate, that was IT.

But now.....

and I mean, the darndest thing is they *DID* start running late-night anime....oh the first year was godawful, laughably bad, but then they got Gurren Lagann and Gundam 00.....and aired it opposite the Daily Show and Colbert Report. Run things at MIDNIGHT you morons! Not opposite ALL light night talk shows that *OWN* The demographic.

One thing is certain: Spring/early summer is usually "convention season" for most areas (right?) well for me my local con is early April, and it promises to be quite....interesting.

I mean we're at a real watershed event here. In that 50 years from now if we were writing the "Book of the history of Scifi TV and movies" we'd be at a chapter break.

BSG is ending....unfortunately it looks like Virtuality isn't getting picked up.....hey are any of the actors working on new projects? I think many are taking time for a long overdue vacation after CONSTANT marathon shooting....and what of the writing staff? where are they going? RDM is getting some movie deals but....

.....maybe we feel unsettled and lost now, but "Star Trek" will really be an amazing movie this summer, it will lead us out of "the wilderness" and we'll be back....and I haven't thought of myself primarily as a Star Trek fan in like.......8 years. I was yelling at Enterprise most of the time starting with its second season in 2002/3, so really, like 5 years of just nothing.

But maybe we're not looking at the big picture: There's a Great Recession affecting all entertainment, and in particular, they're not adapting to DVR and its destroying everything.

All I can say is.....as a younger person I would declare "nothing can follow this!", but there have been times when I had *no hope* for the future of scifi then something unexpected popped up.

I mean after Enterprise season 3 (EVIL ALIEN NAZIS.....that's been done to death already you idiots!) the realization hit me that the show trully was about to be *cancelled* (unthinkable a few years before) I declared that "Scifi TV is over!".....and I'd never even HEARD of Battlestar Galactica back then.

So there WILL be something else eventually.....however long "eventually" is...

but....did anyone see "Kings" Sunday?

King Silas (Saul standin) does some backstabbing that Rev. Samuels (Samuel standin) doesn't like, so Samuel has this scene where he just casts him out and says "you aren't worthy of being king anymore, God rejects you, now you're just a man....and God will have to find someone else worthy of being King", which turns out be be David Shepherd (David standin)

and I feel the same thing after BSG season 3....up until then I was willing to forgive them for Farscape season 4 and the cancellation...YES I'm that stupid......but now?

They're literally not "The Science Fiction Channel" anymore.....So we must find a new channel more worthy of the task.

Michael,

Thanks for posting some responses here, as well as the recent news. It really threw me for a loop as why you made such a radical change.

Loved the new layout, but the new name seemed to come out of nowhere. Now it makes sense.

I am still a loyal reader!

p.s. Anyway you can now do SyFy full time, and have your day job be your part time job?

Morpheus:

Thanks! But no, Airlock Alpha will be my part-time job still, and my day job will be my first job. :)

Yeah, it was a bit radical of a change, but we've had some great feedback so far, and we're proud to have you as a reader!

"Imagine Greater"??? They want you to put more thought into how and why they produce the most shittiest productions that are ever made?!?!?

And a trio of miniseries has been announced, including a new Phantom.
The network has ordered a retelling of "Alice in Wonderland"; a fresh take on the comic-book hero "The Phantom"; and "Riverworld," from a series of fantasy books by Philip Jose Farmer. All the projects are four-hour movies from prolific production company RHI Entertainment.

"Riverworld," about a photojournalist transported to a mysterious world occupied by everyone who has ever lived on Earth, and "Phantom" will air as backdoor pilots -- titles under consideration for a series order contingent on drawing a large enough audience. It's the programming model the network has used with success before, as in the case of "Battlestar Galactica."
---

The new "Alice" promises to be different than previous incarnations (more than a few of which were produced by RHI). The project is written and directed by Nick Willing, who also did Sci Fi's highly rated "Wizard of Oz" revamp "Tin Man."

"Phantom" has been adapted a few times without much success, but Halmi said the previous stumbles are a good reason to try again.

"That there hasn't been a successful 'Phantom' leaves the door wide open for us, since nobody has made it their own yet," Halmi said.

Sci Fi appreciates that the crusader doesn't have superpowers and is more in the grounded vein of Iron Man and Batman. "It's not a guy in purple tights," Stern said.
Sci Fi sets up three RHI miniseries
