New Merlin on BBC

Just as an aside, shouldn't this thread be on the SF/F board? I'd have missed it completely if I hadn't been randomly checking out this board, which I rarely visit.

Merlin seems to be doing fairly well in the ratings, and actually increased this week over the previous 2.

From Digital Spy
First episode
It went on to average 5.08m (27%)

Last week
the second episode in the new run of Merlin delivered 5.07m (27.2%)

This week
Merlin put in 5.41m (28.4%) from 6.15pm

I'm glad the ratings are up, and I don't know why there isn't more action on this board or elsewhere online. Even if the romances seem uneven or irksome to some, I do like that Merlin is getting a little risky with his magic.

As to Arthur having to prove his High King worth and united Albion later on, I don't think the writers have thought that complexly into the legends yet. Right now it seems they're sticking to basic mythos for their tweaking. In a few years if Arthur becomes King, it'll be another villian of the week arena for awhile. I do worry that they are rushing all this, though. I'd be sad if Head departed at the end of this season. I'd be nice to keep Wilson as the veteran for all four or five seasons, or add a good girl Lady of the Lake to replace Head. We know Uther has to go sometime, but I don't think the show is ready to be without him yet.

And hey, nothing says Michelle Ryan can't come back as a new Lady of the Lake after being a bad Nimeuh. She was once good and welcomed at Uther's court, maybe she was just corrupted and Merlin's jolt restored her. I think there should have been more players at Camelot from the beginning. They wouldn't need so many disposable or wasted guest stars if they had more spice at court.

Why won't they do arcs? Normally I like shows with shorter seasons and more quality over quantity, but nearly every Merlin episode seems like it could be a two parter at least. Imagine if they add just two more eps a season-an opening or closing super sized storyline!

I have great hopes for Galahad. If he isn't insufferably saintly I'll be terribly disappointed.

 I was hoping for the same actually - a real self righteous knob who is actually perfect so you can't get mad. I think that would play well with Merlin/Arthur's sort of bumbling incompetence.

Has anyone watched the extended season trailer on the official site? Some quite interesting Arthur/Uthur developments coming by the end by the looks of...

the BBC videos don't work for me here across the pond. More Arthur and Uther would be great before Head has to depart. I really love the paternal relationship between Gaius and Merlin, so a comparison would be nice. I'd definitely love to see more of the knights named and involved in things. I know its a family friendly show, but I'm also surprised by the lack of religion beyond magic and the Druid mentions. It'd be neat to have a monk at court or visits to glastonbury. I think it'd have to be done the right way of course, nothing preachy. Although a bad Morgana using magic to escape a nunnery could be fun!

Okay, I'm supposed to be editing, not theorizing about Merlin!

Basically the trailer features...

Arthur and Uthur crossing swords, Arthur ranting that his father is a hypocrite, and Arthur finally having his sword point to Uthur's neck--I'm suspecting maybe Arthur is under an enchantment

Either that, or Uthur is and Arthur has been pushed too far.

well I'd hope that'd be the case, but that would imply Uthur isn't going to be around in S3!

Thoughts on Episode 4? I haven't watched it yet. I'm going to treat myself after I meet my deadline. I glanced at the IMdb's board. There's the usual love and hate of the handling on Arthur and Gwen. In one or two episodes and depending how the season finishes, I think we'll just have to wait and see. Does the BBC show Merlin straight through is or is there a December break like on American networks?

I think it will be pretty much finished by December, but they wont break December if they are not.

best guess S2 will finish on 19th December, leaving the Boxing Day schedule empty for the BBC to play with

Quite enjoyed episode 4, they played the love triangle well, and Arthur/Merlin interaction was fun and actually pretty amusing. The giant rat things were pretty cool idea for a beast-of-the-week too, hope we see them again.
I was less impressed with the Lancelot/Gwen interaction, clichéd and OTT, imho. I guess I'm becoming a Gwen/Arthur shipper :D

Not a Lancelot/Arthur shipper then? :p

At this point I'm kinda thinking it's a new "stargate" for me. Like Stargate (at least for about half of its run) it's consistently good, but rarely excellent.
