New Klingon look Thread tm: TOS with TNG forehead

I saw Nerys's avatar. Kang has TOS beard and hair. Nerys added a TNG style forehead.

Let me set the scene:

A Tall humanoid with a long coat walks from the shadows.

The figure speaks. "I am Kang."

Kirk defiantly turns his chin up and looks the figure in the eyeholes of his helmet. "I never talk to anyone whose face I cannot see."

Kang takes off his helmet. "So be it Terran." Then Kang hits Kirk in the jaw. Viola'!

The Star Trek: Nero comic gave us a look at nuTrek Klingons aside from those seen in the deleted scenes. They had snazzy updated TOS cosumes (no silly, bulky rubber armour!), ridged heads and short hair.

The leader of the fleet that captured the Narada was Kor.

If there are going to be Klingons in the newest movie, I would prefer them to look like the TOS version, simply because I'm so tired of TNG-style thuggish Klingons. Nero's interrogator in the deleted scenes had the perfect demeanor.

Do you mean the way they look or the way they act? The new look to the Klingons was introduced in The Motion Picture. I like the ridges and hope JJ Abrams keeps them for the new movie if Klingons are in it.

The interrogator most closely acted like how Kor acted in "Errand of Mercy." He wasn't a death-howling, head-butting, bloodwine-swilling thug (at least not until DS9); he was a ruthless and efficient commander. That type of demeanor, mixed with the original look, is what I want.

Having read IDWs Mirror Universe comic which was done in TOS style and used the same Klingon design as their Nero series I think thats just how they design TOS era Klingons for their comics.

I can agree with you on the demeanor, but why do you want them to have the original look?

It's worth noting that throughout the TOS movies they tried all sorts of different styles for the Klingons -- the ones from TMP had Klingon ridges that extended across the top of their heads and then down the back of their bodies like vertibrae. A bit like the Cardassian design later did. Later variations ran the gumult from subtle to over-the-top, but usually in the same film (suggesting different Klingons have got different ridges). It was only TNG which, due to the limits of a television production budget, created a 'generic' Klingon look that was used from one Klingon to the next. It saved time and it saved money, without sacrificing the quality of the actual make-up. Personally I'd hope that Trek 2013 bears this in mind and gives us a wide variety of different Klingon types. On a movie budget, individual Klingons no longer need to look quite so generic.

I thought TNG did a good job on presenting variety in cranial bumps over seven years. Worf, Alexander and Kurn shared the same design, to show they were related. When Kurn was given a new identity, he's forehead bumps were modified.

ST V was guilty of introducing a minimalist, common crest. ST VI scrimped by churning out lots of over-the-head masks and appliances with too few molds.

Definitely far better than SovietKlingons embedded into a fifties style anticommunist propaganda kind of narrative, not to mention that based from the little we saw in the two cut-out scenes their Klingons are fine, brutal and cunning at the same.

I noticed that too and thought it was nice attention to detail.

Which makes this next bit very interesting...

Kor made life difficult for Martok because he was a lowly commoner and not from a noble family. But, did you ever notice that Kor's ridges are the same as martok's?

I'd like to see a mix of TOS era Klingons and TMP to TNG era Klingons to represent both sides of the canon.

It had nothing to do with him wanting to look unique. He just didn't want to wear all that prosthetic rubber and fake hair. Looking unique turned out to be an aftereffect of that.
