New Interview with Bob Orci about Trek XI from the Grand Slam

One way you can tell when someone is out of touch when it comes to sci-fi is the reinforcing of outdated stereotypes of fanbases i.e. Star Wars Vs. Star Trek. Does Orci think that fans are that shallow and petty as to take a swipe at Star Wars just to make Trek look good? Can't fans appreciate both franchises (as illustrated on this board and within my own circle of friends)? Fans being exclusively devotees of one or the other is as much as a fallicy as all sci-fi fans being singe, fat, pimpled males living in their parents' basements. When asked, Orci could have said that both franchises have done wonderful things to raise the awareness of science fiction and that he was proud of being a part of one of them, instead of cowtowing to the minority of lemmings who probably fit my latter stereotype. I apologize for my rant and...No. Wait. I don't. I stand by it. Orci, grow up and realize that not all genre fans, be they Trek, Star Wars, or Transformers fans, aren't mindless zombies who will hoot at the right combination of words.

Just because you made that up and it sounds good to you doesn't make it so.

Orci and these folks know what they're talking about. He's right about "Star Wars."

These folks have been successful before and will continue to be successful because it's the fans who are quick to nitpick and criticize them who are actually "out of touch" with how to make popular entertainment work.

^^^To each his own, I guess. But it still smacks of pandering to the fanbase's lowest common denominator. Much in the same vein of the bimbo starlet who, in interviews, says that she was such a nerd in high school. Right.

I thought that, as a fanbase, we've grown beyond that kind of petty posturing and could see when some outsider tries to mix it up in order to score brownie points. But I guess you proved me wrong, Polaris.

Says the person who's posted enough to reach the rank of Fleet Admiral.

You're keeping score?
Eh, might as well. Score is tied at 4; game is 21. Your serve, blockaderunner.

.
really , it is way to describe the earlier star trek films as well as some of the tos episodes themsevles.
remember tos wasnt always totally strict with its own canon.

just curious do you consider the series a reboot from where no man has gone before since there are differences between it and the series itself.

Star Trek will make the Trek universe ‘feel real in a way it never has before’

Just add dirt.

Nimoy was the ‘key’ to the script: he was the only way to ‘resolve continuity issues’ of the story and to have an ‘appropriate transfer of the soul’

"We needed a way to dupe existing, truly anal-retentive fans into seeing this flick at least once."

There is at least one Star Trek reference in Transformers 2

Bill Shatner plays the voice of Unicron.

Truer words were never spoken... I hate the fact that Nimoy is in this... with all due respect... let old Spock go... "The Undiscovered Country" was meant to be the classic cast's last bow before the audience, and that's the way it should be... I hate how they have to keep finding ways to recycle these old and tired cast members. Let it be, already.

Having the Nimoy Spock in this thing just emphasizes that the writers were either to stupid or too lazy to come up with a totally fresh and new story, that would stand on its own, without the need for a member of the classic cast to act as a proverbial crutch for the film to stand on.

If you're gonna do a fresh movie... do just that... a fresh movie.

Nothing of the sort.

When asked, Orci could have said...

He could have said lots of things. He was hopefully delivering an honest answer, not some prepared party line to make himself and his production team look good.

... that both franchises have done wonderful things to raise the awareness of science fiction and that he was proud of being a part of one of them, instead of cowtowing to the minority of lemmings who probably fit my latter stereotype.

I thought you said those fans didn't exist any more?

Why should science fiction media fans be any more honorable that say, baseball fans? There's nothing wrong with choosing one sporting team and barracking for them only, perhaps even booing the opposition when they are preventing your team from looking good.

He could also have truthfully said "There hasn't been a first-rate 'Star Wars' movie since 1980, so what difference does it make?" but he obviously did not intend to be provocative. :)

Here's what Bruce Campbell, the official Coolest Guy On Earth, has to say about it all:

“Star Trek.” The original … with William Shatner. Everything else blows. The only exception with “Star Wars” is the last battle with Luke and the whole “use the force” thing, but I can’t get into creatures with rubber faces playing instruments. It just doesn’t work for me.

Lamest theory ever put forward around this place. Why does it need to be so complex and conspiratorial? (and this is the first time ever I have seen anyone suggest having a previous actor in a movie to 'pass the torch described this way... it show desperation)

Can't it just simply be, their story and plot called for it? Not having seen the film can't say for sure but it is the simplest more likely reason.
