new insight on Nimoy in ST09?

new insight on ST09?

never heard this before...

I do want to leave off sharing an anecdote that I'm not sure even Mr. Nimoy was aware of. I was told a story once about the early days of the Star Trek reboot. Before they solidified the script Abrams and team knew that they needed a bridge from the last series to this one. They toyed with Spock, they toyed with Kirk and they even toyed with both together.
Remember for a long time Nimoy wanted to seperate himself from the character, so they decided they'd approach them both and see who showed interest and make their decision on which way to go from there. They went to Shatner first and told him the story and how they were thinking about doing it. His reaction was that he'd come back, but only if it was Kirk without Spock.
Then they went to Nimoy, told him the story and how Spock would fit in if he agreed. He loved it and said he would do it. He only had one question: "Do you think you could find a place in it for my friend Bill?"
You've seen the movie, so you know how that turned out.
I know it sounds like I'm holding Nimoy up by shitting on Bill Shatner. That is not my intention at all. I'm sure he had his reasons for thinking of it as a solo Kirk adventure. This story cuts to the core of just how decent and selfless Nimoy was and that sentiment is one I've heard echoed time and again from those that knew him, worked with him and loved him. He was one of the genuinely good people on this earth and that came through in every role he ever played and frame of film he ever directed.

Yeah...I don't think so.

Certainly Shatner's been an apparently difficult character in many situations, but an AICN writer repeating second-hand gossip that makes him look that bad doesn't pass the smell test. There's no reason to believe the incident happened at all.

Quite so. It's unfortunate to see people taking this moment, which should be one of setting aside differences over how we perceive Star Trek as a whole, and choosing to slip in some jabs at people with whom they have "difficulties", like William Shatner in the first post or a few jabs at Abrams I've seen elsewhere. Surely there are enough other days where people can vent their frustrations that we can set aside just a few moments and take time to remember someone about whom there should be no controversy in terms of their contribution to Star Trek or anything else for that matter.

Yeah, I cannot bring myself to trust a website where fanboys are its "journalists".

I mean, I look back at a Comic Con where Harry Knowles is hosting a panel of the stars for (at the time, the upcoming) movie The Expendables. He introduces all of the secondary cast in the team, and then when he introduces Sylvester Stallone, he refers to him as: "My friend...". The look on Sly's face did not seem to reciprocate that sentiment.

Hell, I met Claudia Christian and got along with her famously, but that still doesn't make her my friend, or I hers. I would never presume so unless I heard her say to me: "My friend," and in sincerity, not just as a passing phrase.

Somehow, I get the sense that a lot of these AICN fanboy reporters are rather presumptuous about such things, and as such, feel as if they had the "inside scoop" on everything in pop culture. For that, I just can't see their news as substantial.

I trust "Ain't It Cool News" about as much as I trust the Daily Mail. There's no reason to find anything said in the article to be remotely accurate.

Nimoy is a class act, and we do not need confirmation of that from any source (NO reflection on you, Khan) I am with Dennis, Et al, in spending this time reflecting on that fact, and in gratitude of getting to witness his abilities.
