New Hope footage that was going to open the film and Luke

It's been around for quite some time. about 15 years ago there was a CD called Star Wars: Behind the Magic (or something similar) that had cut scenes and what's in the youtube clip is what was on the DVD.
But it does show the where the some of the scenes in the NRP radio dramatization came from.
Cool, I've never seen that. I had no idea the Biggs stuff had been filmed.
Hm. Well, the dialogue in the first sequence was clearly cut in from the radio series, given how Luke described everything aloud, but it was cut together pretty well with the video.
Yeah it's a cool little scene, and really fleshes out Luke in a nice way (and is a much better introduction to the character than his whiny "Toshi Station" line. lol)
It's a shame they couldn't fit it in, although I certainly agree with their reasoning for beginning the movie the way they did.

Enough to cause some confusion
There was a Star Wars Story Book published 30 odd years ago which consisterd of a simplified version of the story and pictures from the film.
One of the pics was Biggs and Luke on top the building talking. This lead to people thinking yes the scene had been in the flim but never had. Instead we just wondered who the hell Biggs was when it pops up at the Rebel base
He couldn't think of a good excuse for making a CGI Biggs.

I'm pretty sure I've seen most or much of those clips long ago...though sadly, I may have simply cobbled the visuals together while listening to the NPR dramatizations.
But still, pretty cool...does this mean Uncle George has yet another reason to release a new, super-duper extra magical DVD or Blu-Ray? I'm sure a better copy of that footage alone would be enough to justify the extra $75 for the boxed set.

One thing this enlightened me on was "The Academy". I had just always assumed when Luke was whining about going to the Academy it was for the Imperial Star Fleet and he wanted to put on a big ugly mask and fly TIE fighters
So who the hell runs the Academy anyway?

The impression I got was that the Empire's reach hadn't yet fully extended to the fringes, and that Tattooine and perhaps its galactic sector were still fairly independent and had their own institutions. Presumably the Empire, like any successful empire, relied on the cooperation of existing local authorities rather than eliminating them and trying to centralize everything.

I always figured "The Academy" fed into military and maybe a civilian "merchant marine." Biggs does talk about "jumping ship" and joining the Alliance, which of course he does a few hours/days/weeks later.

It's where you get the issue of canon. can't remember in the novelisation but in the radio drama, Biggs talks about being the second mate on the Random Eclipitic which strikes me as being merchant rather than Imperial navy.
