I've moved beyond having a tree at Christmas too. Not as cool as yours, but I create a tree shape on the wall with lights then attach cards from friends and family along the strings as the ornaments.

No light or anything on these. Wires were cut and those with batteries had them removed. Just wanted ships to display.
