New Frontier: Where do I start if...

Manisphere

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I can't find the first several books?

I've heard so much about this series and would like to jump in with book 1. That isn't possible without resorting to ebay and such. New Frontier books are quite hard to find and most have left bookstores.

Can I just jump into New Frontier? (Missing in action and Treason are the only ones I can find in stores. One or two from book 13 on are available from my library. )

Help! :)

They made an omnibus collection of the first 4 books. The book is simply titled "New Frontier". The first 4 books were all mini-books and were released really close together. I've been with NF since the beginning and I love it. Lots of pure trek fun.

And I think you can just jump in. I recommend starting with "After the Fall" (#15) if possible, as the NF timeline jumps three years. It's almost like a new start. Almost. You can just find out the basic's from Steve Roby's site or even Memory Beta.

Good luck...

Thanks. Yeah. I might have to resort to online.

So I guess you guys are defiantly advocating for starting at the beginning?

I have the omnibus of the original 4 novels, as well as the graphic novel of the first 4 comics. Pretty good stuff. I've loved Peter David's work ever since I read "Vendetta".

well i started at the end and worked backwards (which was interesting to say the least!) but starting at the beginning is probably the best bet

If you really can't or don't want to get the first books off amazon or ebay, then After the Fall would probably a good starting point. Like Paris said, it was a jump ahead, so it reintroduces alot of the characters, and starts new story arcs.

Thanks so much. I'm going to start After the Fall unless I break down and go with amazon. :techman:

Or use bookfinder.com, which indexes a bunch of book websites. I see a few copies out there for $4 or less.

You could purchase them as eBooks.

^^ Is your record stuck still Jwolf?

On a less sarcastic note, that is actually a reasonable idea, not one I would whole heartedly recommend though.

I would definitely not recommend just jumping into the middle of this series. Start from the beginning, or don't read it at all. It's sooooo good.

The way I look at it, since the pBooks are not easy to get, then go for the eBooks which are very easy to get.

I totally agree that starting in the middle would spoil the series. This is definitely one that should be read from the start.

If your not totally oppossed to the ebook idea, the hardback copy of Stone and Anvil that i bought came with a CD inside with all of the previous books on it in adobe pdf files. Don't know if this was the same for all of the hardback copies though or if it was just a limited edition thing. Might be worth trying to track down.

I think it was a limited edition, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to track one of the CDs down.

If you can't find the CD, I just checked ebay, and there are a bunch of people selling collections of the first 8 or so novels.

I started with the sixth book of the series. I didn't have any problem figuring out what was going on.

I'm not sure there would be a problem, but I do know that the first 4 books got me HOOKED. Easily some of the most fun reading I've ever done. I blew through all four in a day.
