New Frontier: The Returned Part 1 cover and blurb

Inaccurate covers are a very old and venerable sci-fi tradition. I'm glad to see this tradition has survived the transition to ebooks.

I think it's a bit rich for everyone to be crying about inaccurate covers before we even know a thing about the book!

It's the cover for book 1 of 3, right? Perhaps there are three featured ships (maybe one in flashbacks?) and each one gets its own cover.

Yeah, and it almost looks like they might be doing some homage to the anomaly from All Good Things, where the cast would encounter it in three different time periods (and this cover is showing the earliest one). With this likely being the last NF series, I could definitely see PAD going for something like that, though obviously putting his own PAD-spin on it.

Yeah, substantive portions of the book being flashbacks would not be unprecedented for PAD-- it's worth recalling that almost all of Book 1 of NF was in flashback.

I certainly hope its something like that and not an error. Plus I do really hope this is a finale. I like when series come to a purposeful end.

I want the series to continue, but I'd rather it end on a high note with a good finale than just peter out. I was afraid that the last book was going to be the last book, so if this trilogy is the end, I'm grateful to at least get this. Flashbacks to the past sound pretty fun.
Now I'm already worried about it's going to end.

I don't see any reason to think The Returned is the finale of New Frontier.

If it is the finale, then Pocket isn't being subtle. What I mean by this -- they would be taking a series that went from mass market to hardcover, then to trade, and now kicking it to an ebook novella trilogy. If Manhattan publishing were Hollywood, I'd say that kind of move is a contractual burning off the series as a January release in theaters or a post-2am time slot on television. (Think of the Wheel of Time pilot. Or pretty much any crappy January film.) And the reason why I don't think that's true is that The Returned isn't a contractual obligation; PAD has been straightforward the last several years that his contract for New Frontier novels was up with the last book that came out, which means that Pocket and PAD are starting a new chapter of their relationship with this trilogy.

I do think New Frontier should come to a definitive end at some point, but this isn't the way either side would want to do it. This may be more of a test to see if there's still life and demand in New Frontier.

I'm very excited that New Frontier is returning.

However, I'm very disappointed it's a series of eBooks.

I guess I'll have to cancel my pre-order on Amazon. :(

I don't see any reason to think The Returned is the finale of New Frontier.

The assumption that this is the final New Frontier installment comes from an "Ask Me Anything" that PAD did on his blog several months back. He gave direct, negative responses to any questions regarding further Treklit work -- New Frontier or otherwise -- after this volume.

The Gallery Books trade paperback listing of a Peter David novel we all assumed to be for New Frontier turned out to be for a Halo book:

Thanks for telling us this info, Defcon. I was able to cancel my order with Amazon after reading your post and it saved me from receiving a Halo novel in the post that would have confused the Hell out of me. "When did I order this?"

The series is dying a slow death. This is a series that used to have books come out every few months. How many years has it been since the last book came out? And now they're not even going to spend the money to print these new ones (not at first, anyway).

This whole thing just feels like the end, and The Returned is the publisher's way of giving PAD and the fans a chance to have some closure.

I agree with this notion and I'm fine with the series having a conclusive ending. However, as a long-time fan, I still find it incredibly frustrating that it's digital first without any concrete evidence that it'll be printed later (and if so, when).

I want more NF but I'm grateful to get this.
I want the book in print but I'm grateful to get the ebook if that's all I can get.
