New Fan to Trek - Want a good opinion =]

What's astonishing to me is how old the shows are now----even the "modern" ones. TNG started in 1987.....the year before I was old enough to know what year it was.

Is it really that old the show looks really good for being out in 87!

I just finished up the episode 'The Last Outpost' where the Enterprise and the Ferenghi (no clue how to spell it hehe. go ahead and correct me so I know for the future) are trapped by the remnants of the Tkon Empire. I believe it is the 4th episode of the season! I really liked that one and how Riker saves the day by sticking to his teachings from his academy.

Also loved the part where they sent the chinese finger traps over to them as a 'gift' at the end =D I don't know if I could hold my cool against the Ferenghi if I were ever given the chance. I was a manager of a retail store for a few years and they reminded me of the worst type of customers any retail store could have. Bad memories in retail =\

So I am writing up little 2 sentence summaries of each episode on my computer when I finish them. It helps me retain what I watched and I can also go back to it if I ever want to find an episode I really enjoyed =] I'm doing this based off of the advice to savor the episodes! It really works!

By the way I know it is a little late but hope everyone in the US had an enjoyable 4th of July! Best wishes to you and your families =]

^ Oh, please go on and post your thoughts as you make your way through the series. (Maybe you should start a seperate thread in the Next Generation forum though.) It's very interesting to read what someone who watches these episodes for the first time has to say. For someone who has seen these episodes maybe a thousand times, it's like watching them again for the first time through your eyes.

Oh, and it's Ferengi. So you weren't totally off.

Sorry for the late reply! I have been out and about all day doing errands and the like. So many people have posted to offer their opinions so I will try to reply to each of you in kind! It's the least I can do for sharing your opinion and knowledge on this extensive subject. Thank you again you really have an excellent community here! Hopefully I may join the ranks one day =]

DS9 is great for the story arcs and really getting to know a lot of the races in Trek. They really develop the Cardassians, Bajorans and the Ferengi. And they pick up the Klingon banner from TNG. Even get to see the Romulans once and a while. Also the characters are more diverse and they do a lot more character centric stories.

VOY (Voyager) tries to take the TNG approach into a Lost in Space direction with a little of the tension that DS9 has.

This sounds right up my alley as far as character developments and the like. Do the characters tend to evolve during the show or do they mostly stay the same from beginning to end of the season/series? I will be watching it none the less but I am just curious.

Most of the characters grow to some degree, even if its just in small ways. Dax has the most overt change and I think Odo has the most character growth out of all of them with Worf a close second. Bashir grows up a lot in that show too.

Sisko also has some big changes heading his way.

The Ferengi are a bit odd. In early TNG, they were intended to be a villian race, and are presented as somewhat malevolent. But later it's clearly established that as a race they're primarily interested in profit, and going around threatening people seems out of character.

Hmmm ok maybe my coming here wasn't such a good idea... I have basically purchased (or plan on purchasing) everything with the word star trek on it! Haha but I guess that is my own fault! =]

Welcome to the club! I had to stop only because of lack of funds and a finite amount of room in my house.

Would it really hurt to watch more before seeing the classics? I am pretty good at picking stuff up and the real life tech won't bother me. I LOVED the classic series repeats on SciFi and that was only a few years ago, in fact the lack of real life tech used is more compelling to me, since they had to rely more on story and less on dazzling effects and things like that.

Well if that's not a fan favorite surely the episode ' The Naked Now ' is one of them. I was laughing half way through the episode watching everyone stumble around intoxicated from the other starships disease. Watching Picard hit on the Doctor nearly had me in tears =P

This is an example of why it's important to watch SOME of the TOS episodes first. "The Naked Now" is a sequel to "The Naked Time" from the TOS series, and primarily serves to give more insights into what makes each character "tick."

Heh, I remember when "Encounter at Farpoint" was first shown. It was the same day our local Society for Creative Anachronism group had hosted a tournament and feast. One of our local members invited everybody back to her place after the feast to watch the videotape she'd made during the day... so imagine about 30 people, most in medieval dress, gathered around the TV in a very modern '80s livingroom. And only the King and Queen got real chairs -- the rest of us had to make do on the floor!
