new enterprise

the enterprise may not have wings after all. Trekweb info below.

According to the site, "the basic shape, we're told, is pretty much the same as the good old NCC-1701 (no bloody A, B, C or D or E, for that matter) that we're all familiar with. The big difference is that it's been given a new, grittier metal texture, good, don't f@#& with a classic."

i am a fan of the new voyages, not for the acting but for all of the effort and cash mr. cawley has provided; however it looks as though his paramount sources led him astray.

i am glad they are not fooling around with the basic design.

I agree that they're not fooling around with the basic design but some changes will have to be made to blow away today's generation of filmgoers. The deflector dish and nacelles will have to be updated and i'm glad they're changing the texture. The interiors will have to be completely re-vamped as the technology we have in our homes looks far more impressive than all those big buttons. I want to feel that the Enterprise i'm watching is a product of the 23rd century, not the 1960's.

Can we safely forgot the vectoring/pivoting nacelles too?

This sounds a lot more realistic, and I can't wait to see what they have done with the interior sets. I want to see a 23rd century Enterprise interior where my iPhone would look as outdated as a Mac Plus.

if the romulans are the enemy in this film, and i hope they are, the new bird of prey will be interesting as well. the ship class has always been cool.

nice avatar by the way.

If the Enterprise does end up with a hull texture similar to the NX, exactly how hard would it be to say there was a refit during Pike's era? There's a big difference between TOS and TMP, so who's to say the look in The Cage was the same as when it was launched? So long as it looks like the 60's exterior could be added as a top layer.

Mmm. I'm cautiously optimistic. We could be getting a good design out of this. :)

That may be so but the film seems set when Kirks the Captain not Pike.

Only way your idea could work was if there was a fairly big refit before the REALLY big refit.

That or its supposed to be the same ship but looks different and ignor the differences...these threads really need to stop with wild guessing, why not wait till we actually see some sketches and photos from the production before the internet ceromoniously rips the new film apart any more.

Sounds good. I think most fans are in the "old girl with a slight makeover" camp regarding our beloved connie - looking forward to some pictorial hard ev.

I am very wary of the word "grittier." It could simply mean there's more surface detail visible so that she doesn't look plastic - that joins and seams and rivets are occasionaly visible - or it could mean all sorts of doohickeys and doodads have been added in a digital kit-bashing manner. I just hope she stays white. I'm a starship racist, I guess.

I miss the subtle hint of blue-grey. I don't care if it was blue-screen leakage. I want just a touch of blue-grey in the color of the ship.

I don't want to sound like a broken record or MP3 player but i think grittier is fancy word for modernization.
I absolute sure Enterprise will be updated but not radical. Its going to have saucer, neck/engineering hull and 2 nacelles. I have always said we need to mix Enterprise Refit with Enterprise E design. I have kit bash this from rejected Enterprise E(with neck) Eaves design thou i have made some changes but in essence this Enterprise design would be great in XI.

I don't like the Enterprise "E" at all, really.

You've said elsewhere, IIRC, that John Eaves, the 'E' designer, is not involved with revamping the old Enterprise. Then who is? Ryan Church, or whatever that guy with the Star Wars resume was called?

Not the biggest fan either. I'm most partial to Andrew Probert's work, both the TMP Enterprise and the Enterprise-D.

IMHO, the more faithful to the TOS version, the better. Update the finish and real it up all you want, add detail, but don't change the shape. It's iconic.

Ryan Church is Enterprise designer but Eaves is also working on this film. I am guessing but if Church wanted Eaves input i am sure he will give it.
Enterprise E is probably second best and most modern Enterprise design ever just behind Enterprise Refit.
I find strange people not like Enterprise E but love Refit. Because its clearly Eaves got his inspiration mostly from Refit design. I admit Enterprise E has it problems but its by far superior design then saucer heavy Enterprise D ever was.

Absolutely agreed. I do wish he were involved with designing this film.

And I find this statement strange, as the Refit and the D were designed by the same guy. ;) I think the D is very elegant - it's constructed almost entirely out of ovals. Beautiful.

I wouldn't mind the 1701 with hull texture similar to the NX-01. By the time Kirk got the Enterprise it was already 15 years old, so an upgrade would be totally feasable. Perhaps most of the film we'll see the "grittier" Enterprise and then maybe at the end, after docking at a Starbase for repairs, we'll see the "smooth" Enterprise flying off into the sunset.
