New DS9 Documentary

I also think it would be a nice bonus to have some outtakes from that little pitch video they threw together. I bet there is some funny stuff there!

Special features of the special feature. I'll take that. They looked like they had a ton of fun putting that little video together.

I'm a bit bummed, though, that Avery Brooks didn't want to be a part of it. I wonder if it is because he received negative responses to his “our there” interview in Shatner's “The Captains”.

The problem with Brooks is not just that he is "out there," but even worse, that his comments have nothing to do with DS9. From the convention videos I've seen of Brooks on youtube, he does the same thing there too. He just talks about random things that are irrelevant to DS9. Including Brooks, even if he wanted to be included, would have been counter-productive.

And many other Trek actors also respond to Trek-related events by providing non-Trek-related discussions, or comments that are barely related to Trek.

Are they going to make the participating actors of this documentary sit down and watch many episodes of DS9 before filming them for it, in order to refresh their memories about DS9's content? If not, then most of them will probably not be qualified to give informative answers.

The only thing in this documentary that might be a bit insightful is hearing some of the writers' Season 8 ideas. Even then, I doubt they will go into much great depth about it. Other than that, I highly doubt this documentary will offer any new information about DS9 that hasn't been said before.

I find the requests for money to "pay for DS9 clips" to be ridiculous. Anyone who is interested in this documentary already has all of the DS9 clips. The documentary doesn't need any, and shouldn't use any. All that including clips in this documentary will do is waste screen-time to show us things we've already seen a million times - screen-time that could have been much better-spent on listening to the actors/writers/producers talk.

In fact, that problem is one of the main reasons why the DS9 DVD extras are mostly useless. They interrupt the actors/producers/writers constantly in order to cut to copy & pasted clips from the show. It's incredibly aggravating. It detracts a lot from the experience.

A far better use of money instead of making this documentary would have been for Behr to arrange for Paramount to release the full & uncut interviews they they did for the DS9 DVDs' extras. The butchered versions of those interviews that appear on the DVDs are only a tiny fraction of their full content. Most of that content has never been seen. DS9 was much more fresh in the players' minds at the time of those interviews. Those films surely have much more important & insightful content about DS9 than this documentary will.

Their are countless books and documentaries about Nazism, the Holocaust and World War II. Certainly no new images nor new documents have been created. Although I lament that too much attention is given to this era of history, there are nevertheless new perspectives that emerged, depending on the questions that are posed and the perspective of the individual producing the work. There's no reason to believe that the documentary will simply regurgitate the same ground covered in previous documentary material. Indeed, the recently published Fifty Year Mission Pt 2 shows that plenty of new information and perspective came to light as various people involved in the series answered questions that have emerged since the series last aired.

A new perk has been added:

Support the new #DS9Doc and join the away team at Creation Entertainment’s STAR TREK LAS VEGAS 2017 Convention (August 2-6th, 2017), with this Star Trek: Deep Space Nine themed bundle!

Receive one official GENERAL ADMISSION WEEKEND TICKET to experience the convention, plus our special one-of-a-kind DS9 SWAG BAG (including certified DS9 cast autographs, among other goodies!). Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a private MEET & GREET with many of the cast members and the team from the upcoming DS9 documentary “What We Left Behind," and get access to a special on-site event with exclusive never-before-shown clips from the film! If that weren’t good enough, the producers will also include YOUR NAME in the credits of the film, plus give you access to an early digital stream of the film prior to its official public release.
All for a fairly reasonable price of $625.

I've never been to a convention before, so I don't know what a normal convention ticket with those kind of perks would normally cost, but I guessing it's somewhere in that territory?

The general admission weekend is 330 right now even though I got mine at 245 before they raised the price the next day. That's a pretty nice perk. I hope they do a DS9 What We Left Behind Panel and maybe preview the documentary. They did something similar last year for the Spock Doc.

With the gift bag and backstage perks, the $625 price tag sounds about right.

Lastly, the campaign has received support from a "mysterious" contributor:

That was a great little video. If the documentary is as good as this campaign fundraiser, it's going to be a very enjoyable experience.

I wonder if Mr. F is contributing to the film in terms of an interview? He did direct three episodes in addition to guest-starring in one. I'm sure he would have some interesting comments comparing DS9 and TNG.

I hope the mocking of Patrick Stewart will lead to a Patrick Stewart video. We all know how much of a clown he is as well.

The T-shirts and DVD sets are already selling like hotcakes and the second stretch goal has been achieved.

Very funny!
