New Drama on BBC for 2010

In Memoriam
BBC announced a slate of 20 hours of new drama for the first part of next year today, including a contemporary retelling of Sherlock Holmes by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

Sherlock, 3 x 90 minutes, co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, made by Hartswood Films
A contemporary take on the classic stories, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Dr John Watson. Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced adventure series set in present-day London.

Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Martin Freeman means I'm in.
I'm sure Sherlock was previously announced, but I think it was a one off show, so I'm glad to hear it's been expanded.

The Deep also sounds interesting and just a little bit Science Fiction-y.
The Deep, 5 x 60 minute serial, written by Simon Donald, made by Tiger Aspect Productions
A thriller set far below the Arctic ice, the action follows the crew of an oceanographer's submarine as they search the final frontiers of Earth for unknown and remarkable life forms. When inexplicable circumstances cause catastrophe to strike, the crew find themselves stranded with no power, limited oxygen and no communication with the surface. And they are completely alone – or so they think...

Luther sounds like it could go either way, but I'll check it out.

Luther (working title), 6 x 60-minute series, written by Neil Cross, made by BBC Drama Production
A dark psychological crime drama in which John Luther, a detective struggling with his own terrible demons, might just be as dangerous as the depraved murderers he hunts. Each week, the killer's identity will be known to the audience, making every story both a ticking clock and a psychic duel between hunter and quarry – who have more in common than either would like to think.

All sound good and we will also have Doctor Who back and maybe even a 9th series of Spooks and hopefully some sort of Torchwood too.

I don't know if i going to like the modern sherlock homes.
But the deep sounds interesting.
Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat give me more than enough confidence that it'll be good.

I'm Yank and don't know them-but I'll trust Bob and check this out. Sounds like fun. Is Primeval coming back?
Nope, ITV cancelled Primeval more or less as soon as the series ended.

Mark Gatiss is a member of The League of Gentlemen, if that helps? He's written and guest starred in Doctor Who, Also a short anthology (ish) ghost story series or perhaps a TV movie split in to 3 parts called Crooked House. Check 'em out if you get chance.

Steven Moffat also writes for Doctor Who and has won Hugo awards every year for his episodes, some of the best of the series and as of next year takes over showrunner duties from Russel T Davis. He also wrote and produced Coupling and Jekyll. As well as writing the first movie in the new Tin Tin trilogy.
I'd also recommend those shows if you've not seen them.

Yeah, I wa going to say that while the modern Sherlock sounds a bit meh, Moffatt produced the modern Jekyll, which was far from meh.

Sherlock Holmes sounds interesting but only because of Moffat and Gatiss--heck Moff's modern day take on Jekyll was good.

Deep sounds very interesting, but Luther? A detective struggling with his own demons...yawn!

Hopefully there'll be more Spooks, Waking the Dead and Silent Witness also. Hopefully s4 of Torchwood maybe as well??

Series 8 of Spooks is filming now.
It's not the "struggling with his own demons" thing that's seems interesting, more the audience will know who did it all along that makes it a twist on the standard format.

The Sherlock Holmes looks interesting hopefully it isn't like Robin Hood which I couldn't get into.

Different intents with the shows though, Robin Hood was a 13 episode saturday evening "fun for all the family" show, Sherlock is going to be a series of 3 90 minute episodes going out at prime time.

Doesn't that just make it Columbo though?
Dunno, was Columbo just as sick and twisted as his criminals?

He wore a dirty mac...

As sick and twisted as his criminals...Dexter anyone? I dunno, it doesn't strike me as that original really, but like most things it will probably come down to Casting.

Like I said could go either way, but I'll check it out.
And how dare you, Dexter isn't sick and twisted... He's the best blood spatter analyst in the world.

Although I like the creative team, why should I care for a 'modern' Sherlock Holmes? Isn't that just Morse? A full series of Holmes adaptations would've been the dream, but 'modern' just screams of 'cost-cutting'.

Where is my god damn Hustle BBC.
They're apparently filming soon. Robert Vaughn mentioned something about this series being set in Birmingham.

Or it could just be that they want to do something different with a story that's been told many times before?
