New Discovery On Mars

Vulagr

Commander
After eight years on Mars, Opportunity is still going strong – and still discovering new things! “Completely new” things, in fact, to paraphrase principal investigator Steve Squyres…

While roaming about on Cape York, a large rise on the southwestern edge of Endeavour crater, Opportunity spied a bright vein of rock sticking up through the scrabbly Martian soil. It’s spotted these before, while on approach to Endeavour, but at that point the MER team had their sights set on reaching the crater. Now Opportunity’s spotted another vein, and it’s time to take a closer look!

I'm all for it! Fund NASA and let's GO!

GO GO GO!

I mean PEOPLE!

No offense, but there was no indication whatsoever in your OP that you meant people ;)

And I'm sure we'll see a man on Mars in our lifetime. But he'll probably be Chinese.

I am worried the Chinese will face the same problems the US did with some big talk and plans but lack of will to follow through over the long haul (I really hope they prove me wrong here). I would say a multinational team would be more likely, but that also brings a whole new set of challenges.

China has the same benefit the Soviet's had. Long term government. It let's them take a very long and patient view of things.

It would also be a huge prestige project putting a visible sign up for the exact date China took over as the supreme world power from the US when the chinese flag is planted on Mars.

I think they could do it.. they have massive funds, a government that isn't hampered much by social demands and they don't change governments (and focus) every 4-8 years so they can push through long term plans.

It's a definite possibility.. all it takes is the will of the chinese government and some time to get the technical details right.

Aren't the Russians training a crew to land on Mars?

I thought the Chinese were working towards their goal of a manned moonbase by 2015? Or has that plan been abandoned..

Stop all the talking and DO IT!
We're not ready.

No. It was just an experiment to see how a crew could function in the isolation a trans-Martian crew would experience. It wasn't run by the Russian space agency.

They just performed their first orbital docking last week. I don't think they'll have a functioning LEO space station in the next years, much less a manned lunar outpost.

No, IIRC the current schedule is to have one if not two unmanned landers and rovers by 2013-15 (Chang'e 3 and 4), and an automated sample return mission around 2017 (Chang'e 5). No other definite missions have been announced after that.

I don't think so. We lack the political will and interest to do it. I suspect that if we got off our asses and actually did the work, we could modify our existing technology and take humans to Mars. We created a lot of tech in a relatively short time once we got going in the moon race, we can do it again now.

I do understand the need for caution, but too much caution leads to stagnation and nothing gets done.

Plus, there's this money stuff. I hear NASA might need some to get people on Mars.

Man, space exploration would be so much easier if the Soviet Union was still around for us to wave our giant red white and blue tallywhacker at.

I always find it interesting how different the United State's general relationship with China is than it was with the former Soviet Union. It goes to show how having an economic interest between two countries will forge a lasting peace (with only occasional saber rattling), even between two governments that essentially hate each other.
