New Cast Pics! (from the Cloverfield premiere)

The thing that strikes me is that the cast seems--feels--very large for a movie. But that may be my fan bias. Because I'm familiar with the characters they play, I can imagine them all being the 'stars' of the movie. Whereas I suppose that it's much more likely that characters like Chekov, Sulu, Pike, perhaps even Kirk will get only a few minutes of screentime.

Pine looks really Kirk-like in those pictures. The hair makes all the difference as I had only seen him with it very short beforehand. I hadn't noticed the eye colour, I can't say I've ever noticed what colour Shat's eyes were either so I guess I don't care. :p

The pictures look great. Urban really does look like an 'ol crusty bastard in those pictures. Coupled with the new hairstyle and sideburns, I have a feeling he's going to play McCoy wonderfully.

And surely you all saw the Zoe Saldana pic...

You know, I think the look is less important for Yelchin.

Depends how the kid can say "Keptin" I think. :D

It's worth remember that prior to Trek, De Kelley had mainly played villains in cowboy movies. Really, the pedigree between Kelley and Urban is quite similar.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned Urban's mentioning of his "dialect coach." ;)

Has Lindsey Lohan been cast as Janice Skank or was she at the premiere because there was free booze?

I'm glad he's got one. It's important to me that McCoy speaks in his distinctive Southern drawl, it's part of the character's charm.

wait, wait, wait... so... they did the pointy side-burns thing? That's great! At least, seems so, hard to tell from the angle of the picks.

Personally I'd prefer he have an accent from outside the U.S. (If Roddenberry's utopian future's really supposed to be a cultural melting pot instead of laden with stereotypes.)

Oh coolio my man, Urban definitely has the burns. I skipped the vid, I care so little about listening to actors in interviews (mainly because the questions are incredibly juvenile).

Is there something stereotypical about McCoy's accent? I thought it was Kelley's own. And, to be honest, I don't see much point about changing his accent.

Well, to be fair Gene R. didn't just have the southern country doctor stereo-type, he also has a Scott, a Russian, an African... etc. That's a big old pot of melding I reckon.

That's my point. Gene patted himself on the back for representing the United Nations on his bridge but he did so with almost every cultural stereotype he could think of. Uhura's the black woman with a Swahili name that mean's "freedom" from Africa, Chekov (one "h") is the Russian with a Russian name and Russian accent, McCoy (because "Hatfield" was taken?) is the American redneck with a southern drawl and xenophobic attitude, and "Scotty" is the guy with the Scottish accent from Scotland who loves his Scotch. Hell, even the token alien has pointed ears and green blood.

Like I keep saying, if race and culture were really such a non-issue in the future, Sulu would be the black chick. The only evidence of a melting pot on the bridge is Spock, a half-human referred to as a "half-breed" by the ship's middle-American, white bread, womanizing captain.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Me thinks that Quinto is wearing the Clark Kent goggles to hide his partially shaved eyebrows required for the appropriate Vulcan swoop. :)
