New BBC Store has launched

Yup, region locked.

Can I buy from BBC Store if I live outside the UK?

  • We currently only allow residents of the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Channel Islands to buy programmes from BBC Store.

After comparing with the prices of newer, non-Who stuff on iTunes, it would seem that they're only offering SD at the moment. I don't see any blurb at the site to explain what formats are available. I would prefer to pay for a subscription service with the option of HD, but I don't feel like paying as much as for Netflix (£7 pcm) as I already pay a licence fee, which amounts to over £12 pcm. There's precious little in the way of extras, although they're thinking about introducing those -- I expect for a price, of course.

I was going to buy Mr Norrel and Jonathon Strange on Blueray, but picked it up off the BBC store yesterday in HD. There was two options to purchase.

They need a preview option though.

I presume over the next few months more shows will be added.

Hmm, the Blu-ray of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is only 91p more expensive on Amazon and includes special features.

They don't state whether subtitles are available for the download or streamed versions. Are they?

There is a 25% discount code on the store just now (WELCOME25), so it was a bit cheaper than that.

Pricing and resolution aside, good to see Auntie finally getting their shit together (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Media_Initiative).

When I was there, plan was to digitize all that extraordinary archive and make available to both producers and licence payers.

So looking forward to finally seeing some of those rare gems eventually ekeing their way online.

Yes, I think all the iplayer shows have subtitles.

Civilisation, Alistair Cooke's America and The Ascent of Man are not available. There is The Ascent of Woman though -- I guess I know who wears the trousers now.
