Two years of rumors have been confirmed in the last two weeks. There is a new Avatar series in the works.

According to an inside source on the Avatarspirit boards, a Canadian animator who interned at Nickelodeon a few years ago, it is a mini series that will begin production in May. (She knows because she submitted a portfolio and talked to their recruiting head).

This is great news.

I'm not sure what to think about this. The series wrapped having completed its story and most of the time it's just best to let it be over. A prequel seems somewhat superfluous as we already got a ton of backstory during the series however the idea of seeing what happend next has its appeal.

At least its not a project where the original creators are not involved. That would have killed its potential.

It seems to me that the obvious way to go would be to resolve the lingering threads about Zuko's mother, and maybe explore how Aang is rebuilding the Air Nomad society and restoring the balance.

I think if it's actually going to be called Avatar: The Last Airbender, then it has to be post-series, because anything set in the prior 100 years wouldn't have the Avatar in it, and if it were set in Aang's childhood, he wouldn't be the last airbender yet. (Not to mention that Zach Tyler Eisen no longer sounds like a 12-year-old boy.) And there doesn't seem to be much point to doing something set during the series, or much opportunity to fit a whole new story into the arc.

HOORAY! I just got into the show a few months ago but it's definitely my favorite animated series ever. I'd like to see the fate of Zuko's mother, and rebuilding the Air Nomads is also a good idea. Hopefully they'll find another living Sky Bison for Appa to get it on with and repopulate the species!

Yeah, I don't see any way to go aside from "The Search for Zuko's Mother." They can throw some antagonists in fairly easily as well, whether it be in the form of a renegade group of fire benders, the remnants of that "Big Brother"ish Earth Kingdom secret society, or both.

Mmmm... after rewatching (and attempting to not blub my way through the finale) the entire show I'm now convinced it's perfect as it is.

If the original creators were involved I'd be interested, but I'd prefer to see them create something new.

Hugo - BOOMERANG!! You came back!

That is what I am hoping for. Hopefully the same voice actors return as well.

Unless they plan on going back and telling the tales of some of the Avatars before Ang. I personal think Keoshi would a great story to tell due to her lasting impression in that world.

I think there are plenty of avenues to take in re-visiting this world without actual involving Ang, Katara & Sokka again.

Absolutely. But in that case, I assume it wouldn't actually be called Avatar: The Last Airbender. That would be as inappropriate a title as, say, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, in which the protagonist was neither home nor alone. Although we did a bunch of Thin Man movies without the Thin Man in them (though the first sequel was at least called After the Thin Man) and a bunch of Pink Panther movies without the Pink Panther diamond in them, so I guess it's been known to happen.

Perhaps they could keep the Avatar title, but the subtitle should be something else if it's not about Aang. Since the news item is calling it "a new Avatar: The Last Airbender project," rather than "a new project in the A:TLA universe," that might suggest it's a continuation of the existing story and characters. Then again, it might just be sloppy usage.

My question is: Is the title still going to remain "Avatar: the Last Airbender" for the mini series or are they just using that as a working title so that we the audience know what the project is, so that newbies don't confuse it for a series about Camron's "Avatar"?

I'm trying not to assume just from the title alone what/where or when this mini series will take place.
Know what I mean?

One dilemma I can see confronting Fire Lord Zuko is that simply pulling his troops out of the areas the Fire Nation controls might prove difficult. What to do with all these former soldiers is one question. Another is areas where there is no longer a power structure absent the Fire Nation, and the locals may want some presence. Then of course, were she to learn that there are disaffected soldiers to lead, Azula could snap out of it.

On a different level, maybe they find out that Sokka and Suki's implicit messing around has had consequences.

Wow, I'm pretty surprised (although, I guess they want to cash in on the movie?). I felt it ended well, but there was the question of Zuko's mum, so anything is possible.

I'm sure they've always been open to the possibility of doing more stories in the show's universe. I believe they've said before that they were open to the possibility. But it's the studio's desire to cash in on the movie that's presumably led to the producers being given the go-ahead to tell one of those stories.
