New Appreciation for TAS

Wasn't there a classic TOS universe Japanese Anime Trek out there? I've never seen it..But want to. Anyone know if it's any good?

Not that I know of. There were the TokyoPop manga-style Trek comics, and I recall reading about a fanfiction Trek manga back in the '80s or so, but all I find when I Google "Star Trek anime" is some fan art, a couple of fan-made video mashups of anime footage and Trek audio, and some articles about anime that Trek fans would like.

Wouldn't an anime have to be licensed?

If it were made for profit, yes. A fan film would be another matter, but the only fan videos that came up in my cursory search were the mashups I mentioned.
II was thinking an animation would have to be done by a studio but maybe it could be done by a fan but I'm not sure of the capabilities of photoshop and the like.
I'd be very interested in seeing an anime TOS or any other Trek. If only I could draw...

There have always been amateur animated films made by hobbyists and aspiring filmmakers, and student films made in film school programs. These days, there's software that makes it a lot easier for amateurs to create professional-looking work. I think I've seen one or two amateur films done in anime style. I think there was this one animated fan film a few years back based on the new Battlestar Galactica (or something like it) that really wowed the Internet because of how intricate and dynamic it was.

I just finished this series. My favorite eps are Mudd's Passion, The Survivor, Yesteryear, and Beyond the Farthest Star.
I think those are all solid TAS episodes.

I know "Mudd's Passion" gets some slack, but I've always liked it.

My top four favorites are:

"One of Our Planets Is Missing"
"Yesteryear"
"Beyond the Farthest Star"
"The Time Trap"

Yesteryear has to be one of the top episodes! Time Trap and More Tribbles were both good too!
JB
Those two were both also very good imho... Time Trap almost made my top list, along with Practical Joker (which reminded me of the ads in the back of the comic books back in the 70s for the gag gifts).

Another vote for Time Trap :techman: Generally I liked season 1 more than 2, but 2 was also truncated, so not as much to choose from (maybe TPTB ended the series to make way for the Saturday morning 'toon version of Planet of the Apes?) ;)

No. It was actually very common back then for new seasons of animated shows to be just a handful of new episodes added to the endless cycle of reruns from the previous season or seasons. TAS was far from the only Filmation show that did this. Children have more tolerance for reruns than adults, as you can see today on networks like Nickelodeon, Disney XD, and Cartoon Network, which rerun their hit shows endlessly and only occasionally drop in new episodes on irregular schedules.

I was sort of kidding about the Planet of the Apes... they were both on NBC and ST disappeared shortly after (or maybe just prior to) POTA started.

I remember Filmation doing the Tarzan cartoons where Gorillas could speak and wore gladiatorial armour!

Those weren't gorillas, those were Bolmangani. The Mangani were the species of gorilla-like, sapient, tree-swinging great apes who raised Tarzan and taught him their language (also called Mangani), while regular, non-talking, land-dwelling gorillas were called bolgani. The Mangani also applied their name for themselves to humans, so when Filmation created a breed of man-apes for their show (not present in the books), they blended the names into Bolmangani.

Thanks for that bit of info! It must be forty two years at least since I've seen that Tarzan cartoon! Not available on DVD is it?
