New Aluminium Macbooks next month

$999 above my budget.

$199 Touch though sounds interesting. Especially after 3 of 3 iPhone 3Gs were iFailures for me

I'm not very familiar with Apple's launch history, so when would these be likely to hit the market after the unveiling event? I'm going to be looking to be a new laptop within the next two months or so, and a MacBook is one of two options that I'm considering.

I've needed a new laptop for several years now. Still, due to a tax situation I should probably hold off on getting one for a few months. Maybe in November.

If Apple were to introduce an 8-10" Netbook model, I'd be interested.

That would be nice.

If Apple could keep the "We are Cool" pricing factor out.

Just something basic to keep the iPod going.

The pricing is not my favorite aspect of Macs.

But considering the things last for pretty much as long as you're willing to put up with old hardware, with only a very occasional repair, I don't find that an insurmountable obstacle.

^ Basically a small and inexpensive notebook, usually featuring a 7-10" display, low-cost/power CPU such as Intel's Atom, SSD storage, and running Linux as standard. The OLPC XO-1 and Asus EEE PC are the most well known netbooks. Dell will shortly be fielding a 9" model for ~$300, which will hopefully kick the market up another notch or two. :)

So would an Apple netbook still run OS X?

It does sound intriguing. With the advent of MobileMe, there has been a lot of talk about 'cloud' computing. But there have been so many problems with MobileMe that I don't see this working as an entire computing platform.

I don't imagine that Apple would even consider creating one that didn't. Most netbooks also offer XP at additional cost, not Vista as the systems generally aren't powerful enough to run it.

Unfortunately it's probably not a market segment Apple are interested in pursuing, although I'd certainly like to see their take on the concept.
