Hi there. I'm a complete newbie here (poking my head in because the remastered TV images made me feel all nostalgic...) but this thread got my photoshop juices flowing so I thought I'd try an image of Kirk leaving the Enterprise prior to the refit. See what you think. I thought it would be nice to parallel his return in The Motion Picture.

    <img src="http://www.dragonhaven.plus.com/other/pre_movie_refit_small.jpg">

Just in case that didn't work the image is here: http://www.dragonhaven.plus.com/other/pre_movie_refit_small.jpg
The much larger original image (447k) is here: http://www.dragonhaven.plus.com/other/pre_movie_refit.jpg

Most of the image is composed of various screen grabs from my TMP DVD. Kirk and Scotty are from Spock's Brain courtesy of the screencaps on TrekCore. The Enterprise is actually the Defiant from In a Mirror Darkly, Part 2, again thanks to TrekCore.

^^^ NICE. The only thing I might have done differently is add some motion blur on Kirk and Scotty along the same vector as the motion blur of the travel pod. Very good!

Thanks! Yes, I knew there was a difference in resolution between the occupants and the travelpod, but I was reluctant to blur their faces too much! I've tweaked it slightly. If possible I'd have liked a higher-res image of the travelpod to work with but there's never one with the whole pod in shot at the right angle.

I just couldn't resist putting this up for the sake of comparison. Forgive me for tooting my own horn.

the third shot looks by far the best. your shot on the bottom looks awesome. definately the second best ship. or maybe equal to the third ship. The second shot has the best planet that isnt earth tho.

I think it's a close call between the third and fourth orbit shots for me. The third one is the most reminiscent of the 'look' of the original show, while updating the effects (and what an improvement between those two CBS shots). The fourth is the prettiest and most artistic shot.

you're right about the nacelles, warped9. You certainly beat the professionals in that respect.

^^ Okay, well I kinda cheated there because I'm building my image onto an actual model and those nacelle domes were photo lifted right off a still of the original Enterprise filming miniature. :D

Personally, I'd love to see a shot composite using the unused space/planet shots from Forbidden Planet. Those are what we would have gotten from a high budget TOS (done ten years earlier!)

I like your ship and your phaser beams, but they look like they're shooting a little to the ship's left (of course, that may have been your intention). I do think the CBS CGI beams look more powerful.

When I did they phaser beams I worked out where the ship's centerline was (in perspective) and followed that. And so the illusion that they're shooting slightly to one side of the ship rather than directly ahead is just that, an illusion.

Quickly threw these together and they look more like paintings than photomanips.

Wow. It's been a helluva looong time since I've looked at these. I'm reminded of how much fun they were to make and ponder what might have been in some cases.

Someday I've got to try and conjure up more of these, hopefully when I'm not tied up in other projects.

I was hoping you might revisit this at some point in the future. So I'm obviously hoping you find some free time soon.

^^ And some of this stuff doesn't look half bad either if I may say so myself. I must admit to being a bit impressed with how some of this came out after not looking at it for so long.

Okay, thats enough self congratulatory hype.

I just waited ten minutes for this thread to load just so I could read "I should do more of these"?!?!?!?
